             Tradition

In a south Louisiana classroom
the English teacher prodded—
“Give me an example of ‘tradition.’”

Silence.

Finally, from the back of the room,
a hand wavered up.
“It’s like our hat rack.”

“Hat rack, Lola?”

“My pa built it—
h
anged his hat there
ever day after work.”

“Well, I guess that’s an example of tradition.”

“Pa died.
Step-paw wanted to yank it out, burn it.
I told Sissy, and she showed up right quick.
When Step-paw come to,
he said we could keep our old hat rack.”

“Yes, Lola. That’s tradition.”

Glad you like it. It's a true story that one of our educator friends told us.

A triumph of humor and understatement! Not to mention female empowerment.
Go Sissy!

I'd love to have seen her lay that guy out. She evidently impressed Lola.

That's an excellent family tradition. Sounds a lot like my family at times.

Yeah. My dad's family used to act like this sometimes. They were fun.

This space of yours is becoming tradition.

I come here and expect to see the regulars commenting on Shelley's latest - funny how it's become a Sunday tradition to drop in and feel somehow comforted.

I guess that's what tradition is all about. Feeling comforted.

Thanks- xoxC

Interesting observation. Some folks obviously can stand to have only so much of their comfort zone messed with.

Thanks for the enlightenment.
