So we showed up at the studio Saturday to start recording at noonish in true Burnitdowns fashion: Matty, Chris and Jesse were hungover, I hadn't slept at all, and Sammy was Sammy. It's actually in a big ol' folley room (where they record sound effects for movies), so there's lots of space. It's at Recording Arts Canada, which is a school that teaches recording, so it's pretty awesome. The head instructor there, a guy by the name of Andrew, is engineering the record for us. Our buddy Boneless is helping us produce it, and our buddy Darcy walks around swearing a lot. It should be fun.
We decided to record live-off-the-floor in an attempt to capture that ever-ellusive live energy. So far I think it was the right decision.
We knocked out the bed tracks for 7 songs in the first day and they sounded really awesome. At one point I dropped Jesse's Telecaster in a typically clumsy, thunderous fashion. Matty slow-clapped and we all laughed.
We showed up Sunday around noon again. We then began to record 4 more bed tracks - at that point all the heavy lifting was done. Jesse borrowed his dad's piano and while Boneless and Andrew edited some shit we ended up writing some new stuff that will show up on various parts of the record.
This album is gonna be a little different it seems... but we're all really excited.
At that point we started recording the guitar over-dubs and piano and we got all of the down pat.
Over the next week we'll be going back in to record an acoustic song or two, and bringing in all the guest musicians we're planning on bringing in. Should be sweet.
