Big thanks to those who came to the Zoo. You troopers RULE Brisbane. I felt so sick afterwards, and sick in a good way, because I think we played a great gig. Maidens, you made my evening. Thanks for having me.
Anybody else see this week's issue of Scene? I'm speechless.
'Trouble Being Yourself' Yeo (Independent)
This is one sparkling little surprise straight out of a Brisbane bedroom studio. It's the work of the clearly talented Yeo Choong, a 21-year-old Uni student. It's songs are soul, reggae and electro funk-laced folky rock pop with an undoubted cool indie edge, but also a lot of mainstream appeal. I know it sounds like too much - a potentially clunky mish-mash of styles but it totally works. It's Yeo's sagely naïve everyman charm that pulls it all together. The album is all awash with synth and programmed drums, natty keyboard plonks and buckets of hot buttered soul. Some songs are shimmering pure smooth electro pop that Phoenix would be proud of – others are Beatlesque folk songs that ache with feeling. He apparently wrote some of these songs for other people with his voice as a guide track. But his voice has a personal and soulful quality. It sounds to me like the voice of someone I'd like as a person and that's what you want. I just hope he gets with good management and a label that allow this young man to unfurl his talent his own unique way. Pat Whyte
