Category: Life

Well, well, well - have you ever woken up late,
and the first thing that happens to you is what
feels like a 2-ton anvil dropping on your head?

That's me, today. I woke up late, fighting off this shit flu
that's going around. I got in my car to get my coffee,
popped on Indie 103-1, and....well - you know the rest

INDIE 103-1FM WILL CEASE AIRING ON THE FM DIAL

I am basically hearing this same news as all of you are -
even though I've worked at the station for 4 years!

But, you should know in radio: When something gets cancelled
or goes off the air, they don't give you a "heads up" - this kind
of shit just happens - always a "rug pulled out from under the feet"
kind of thing, ya know?

I don't even know what to say at this point...
I feel like someone just sucked the life right out of me...

All I know is, is that Indie 103-1FM is/was

THE BEST FM RADIO STATION
WE EVER GOT TO EXPERIENCE!!!

Don't believe me? Just try - TRY - to listen to any other FM station
for more than 15 minutes - let alone any longer - and see if
you can stomach not only the tunes, but the repetition. Not to
mention suffering through DJ's who sound like complete
wankers who know NOTHING about the music.

When Indie came on the scene in December 2003, my
jaw hit the floor. I could NOT believe what I was hearing.
And I knew I had to find out who they were, and work
for them on ANY level.

I even worked for FREE the first two years at the station,
when I did the "Mashup Of The Day" feature and then
eventually "The Smash Mix". The last time I worked for no pay
like that, was my first job ever in radio - answering the request
lines at WCOZ in Boston - when I was friggin' 19 years old.

But getting paid isn't the point. Freedom of expression IS!

And to be able to be a part of something as amazing
as Indie? There's no price-tag you can put on that, my friends
(Jesus, I hate John McCain - I can't even say "my friends"
anymore without a pain going down my spine...)

Apparently Indie will continue online, as they already have
millions of people listening there from around the world.
People in bum-f'ck small towns with no choices whatsoever,
or serious music fans on any continent, really.

I still haven't gotten any direct word from my boss or
the station on what this means for me. I don't even know
if I'm supposed to show up on Saturday night for "Neon Noise" -
which really sucks, because I had Jokers Of The Scene
lined up to come in and be on the show with me...Ugh.

And - January 24th would've marked the 2nd Anniversary
of "Neon Noise"....now, I have no idea.

Maybe we should all be thrilled we got to have Indie
for as long as we did.? All good things come to an end,
as they say. And we know that's 100% true in life.

In closing, I have to personally say THANK YOU to anyone
reading this, who stumbled upon me my BECAUSE of
Indie 103-1FM. I've met some of the most passionate,
fervent music fans over the last few years - and each of
you reminded me why I love doing what I do!!!

SO - ONWARD AND UPWARD!
All my best,
DJ Paul V. / Indie 103-1FM

Los Angeles a population of 10 million, NOT counting Orange and Ventura county, you would think that cutting edge radio could have enough of an audience to pay the bills. I guess it's a double edge sword because the more population, the more the airwaves cost to transmit. this leads to a watered down, big mainstream numbers "Wal-Mart" ideology for radio stations. . . .There have only been a few cool standouts in LA music radio history. KROQ the long survivor that was building it's kingdom in the early to mid 80s, peaked in mid 90s and now has become Payola-fide to keep being the king cash-cow it stumbled into. On the opposite end KXLU a very small local college station but run by students not savvy DJs like Paul. Mars (103 ?) that had promise to maybe be a indie103.1 but fizzled and lost funding. ......... Then there is INDIE 103.
1 This station saved radio in LA. Gave us Quality and Quantity of cool. Not since the mid 80s has radio been such a "Maverick" (let's take back the word). A station like indie 103 helped kids see the light to be influenced by past and present cutting edge music that may go inspire to be in cool bands and then in turn be played on a station like 103.1 and the world. . . . . . . . . It can still be heard on-line thank God (I'd like to think God has indie 103.1 programmed on his Godmobile radio). . . . . . Support PAUL V at his Club Bootie, Dragstrip 66 and on-line at indie on-line . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I'm absolutely stunned, Paul. It's all of our loss, and it was a grand experiment in progressive music. There will be more.

Ugh....I relied on that station so much, especially when stuck in traffic! Please keep us posted on what's going on.
Steve and I meant what we said about getting together sometime, even though that was over a year ago!

Has it really been five years?! This proves that life flies by when accompanied by the most amazing soundtrack…
If not for Indie, I would not know mashups and nor would I know and love the talent & charm that is DJ Paul V. Perhaps we should consider ourselves lucky to still get Indie online (and Paul V at Boot!e and Dragstrip), but the corporate agenda has scored another big win against arts and expression. It is now up to us as individuals to keep the word on GREAT music circling. FUCK CORPORATE RADIO.

It's like we lost our best friends. Only station I could listen to. I was so proud of all you guys. I feel like we all took a big step backwards. I wish there was something we could do.
