So I was driving home from work today and every once in a while (maybe once a month) I will pass by a driveway where an old old man who walks with 2 canes gets his mail as I pass by. This guy walks very slow too, I mean he seriously uses 2 walking canes.
Anyways, I passed by him today and I noticed one of his two trash cans had fallen into a ditch and he was trying to get it out with his cane. It was one of those big trash cans with the wheels and you tilt it to move it around. The guy couldnt even bend over. He was holding onto the other trash can for support.
I thought about it for a couple seconds (cause by that time I had just passed by him) and realized that hes never gonna get that thing out. He looked like he was struggling hardcore. So I turned around at the next light and then again at the next one and pulled over by him on the side of the road. I went over and said "Hey, let me help you." I went into the ditch (it was dry) and got his trash can out for him.
He wobbled over to me from across his driveway cause he had given up and went to get his mail on the other side of the driveway and he said "Thank you! What is your name?" I told him my name and he thanked me again. I told him to take care and he said that was very kind.
I got in my car but I didnt feel any different than I did before I made the decision to help him out. Of all the people that were driving by that saw him, I was the only person who stopped. I thought I would feel good about it, and I do, but its different. I dont feel good that I did something good. I feel good that I made someone else feel happy. What I did will probably not change anything in my life but I dont care much. Its not about how I feel. Its about how I make other people feel. I think thats most important.
