The Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that the General Tire building in Akron, Ohio, where Dan & Pat recorded Rubber Factory is being torn down.  Among other things left behind, was the mixing desk The Keys’ used in recording sessions for the 2004 release.

im really sorry to hear that, i though historic buildings are not allowed to be dismantled. i mean its apart of ohio and our country for rubber. that doesn't make any sense, first i heard ohio is considering taking our local history studies out of the schools and then this.

I have to agree, It's not like the building was being used for anything at this point.  I personally think that adds to the soul of the album, that it will outlast that building 10 fold!  I just don't see what the big issue is.  They tore down the Nyabinghi here in Youngstown where the Balck Keys performed and where a lot of people hung out at on a daily basis but once the building becomes too run down it has to be removed for something for efficient!  Just my 2 cents!

I drove by the half torn down building yesterday because of the Martha Ave. detour.  I didn't know that's where you guys recorded Rubber Factory, interesting.  There are a lot of changes going on in that part of town.  It's never going to be the same.

Shouldn't have lef tthe desk behind, and have always loved that album - outstanding piece of work.

But if an old factory has asbestos and is lying vacant, then it has to be fixed. Asbestos is a killer.

In saying that you would have thought a building over 100 years old in America would have been worthing restoring to a safe state rather than destroyed.

No stopping progress

Come back to Scotland, please

I grew up a couple of blocks from there. I hate to see it getting torn down. It's not only part of Akrons history but part of my childhood being demolished. A lot of good people and childhood friends have lost their homes to this project. My neighborhood is just about gone now. Thank you TBK for making it a place that will never be forgotten. Because of your album a part of Akrons history will be remembered and a part of my chidhood will still be there, even if only in memory.

Tearing down this building will just make Rubber Factory that much more unique as no one will ever get the chance to record there using the natural reverberation of the building.  Just another notch in history.

As a local historian, I had no idea.  You'd think someone would have said "Hey wait, there's something in there that's important!" beforehand.  There's even a small historian team that will go in for free ahead of time and clean a place out.  It's just a matter of people not talking.  Also, note it's probably not a developer, it's probably the University of Akron.  I'd guess though that someone cleared out the desk beforehand.

We lost an entire mansion not 10 miles from downtown Akron in 1965 because a developer wanted to put up a mall (which never happened).  He offered the building to our city for $1, and our city didn't have the forsight to realize the long-term worth of such a place.  Now we have a bunch of mini-McMansions and a lot that won't sell because the foundation is still on it.  :(

Akron has definitely been morphing.  Some for the good, some for the bad I'd say.  At least now it's okay to walk around downtown at night.  Back in the day, that couldn't always be said.  Or if you said it, it would have had to be quickly as you ran to your car, rolled up your windows, and locked the doors.

Heritage is what makes us what we are.  Sadly, too many with power are still stuck in the 80's mindset of profit and "progress".  Do you have a plaque scheme going in Ohio, so the site can be commemorated?

So many sites of my youthful socialising have been lost in London.  The Clarendon, both Marquees, Fulham Greyhound, Camden Falcon.  Yes, we do have to move on, but popular culture is history too and we need to ensure the powers that be give it due respect.

There seems a trend right now for developers to buy up properties, trash them with a view to building once there's money around again.  In doing so, they blight adjacent buldings, who sell up to there and before you know it a whole block is flattened to make "luxury apartments" - normally where they've got permission on the proviso of "affordable housing"

Funnily enough three of my favourite buildings are derelict, with little chance of being demolished or developed.  One because it forms part of a working farmyard, another because it's in the middle of a cornfield and the third because it's in one of the most expensive areas of the country and is most like a listed ancient monument.
