"Doctor uses ADHD drug Adderall, an amphetamine, to treat childhood obesity". This was a headline taken from CNN this morning.

Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. It is also a drug of abuse and may be habit-forming. Here are some of the side effects: elevation of blood pressure, psychotic episodes, over stimulation, restlessness, dizziness, insomnia, euphoria, dyskinesia, dysphoria, depression, tremor, headache, exacerbation of motor and phonic tics, Tourettes syndrome, seizures, stroke and sudden death.

Child obesity has reached an all time high in America. It's amazing to me that no one is talking about the root of the problem, instead they want to "drug" the kids and seriously compromise their well being. Parents want to blame schools, government and T.V. commercials. Like everything else in our "modern society" they are looking for a "shortcut".

Should the government take more responsibility in educating the public, doing things like limiting junk food commercials? Or is this primarily the responsibility of the parents to make sure that their children understand the basics of a healthy lifestyle?

seriously, you will have to read my novel when it is done... soon.  I really appreciate you sharing this with me and others... it is true, your concern is one that we all should share... if you have a moment, read my blog from today, titled.  "Nobody said it was easy..."

Hugs to you for your depth... and honesty.

I have read numerous articles on this subject and have watched with my own eyes. What I see going on here is the trend. So many, but not all, parents are giving the responsibility of teaching their children to outsiders. Their own life takes priority over the kids.  Kids are left to make their own decisions for food choices, entertainment, and life in general. The idea of positive disipline and teaching from the parents doesn't seem to play a role in many households.  Family time has gone by the wayside as has good home cooked healthy meals.

The obesity problem with our children I feel is mainly the parents fault.  Yes media plays a huge role in swamping kids with a lot of negative influence and the school system, at least in my area is not teaching good eating habits. Lunches consists mainly of  premade pizza or high fat sandwiches trucked in daily from a food service. These are the only daily choices for lunch if purchased at school. And I sure do not live in a poverty stricken area! If the kids are taught the real value of a healthy meal from birth and watch their parents set that example we wouldn't have this hugh of a problem.

Government.......Big Brother keeps moving in on us and we are allowing it to happen!  Wake up people, get with the  program and take on the responsibility of yours and your childrens lives before one day your say means nothing and we're all walking around like zombies!

I do not think children should be treated with these medications!  They  are just another "quick fix" for a problem that can be solved in the home.  Where is the self disipline parents?  If  parents do not teach their children basic knowledge and live as examples then where are we headed as a society?

Thanks for your post and listening to my two cents.

Val

Babies learn from what they hear, see and taste. They are good at immitating the adults. That's why it's important to start teaching kids when they are at a young age because they are more open to what you offer them. But parents today become more consumed with their own personal lives that they forget to teach their children the importance of eating healthy and exercising. Kids become neglected and are more interested in the latest video games or latest craze and parents encourage it to keep them "out of trouble" or more like, out of the way. No, the government is not responsible. The parents are responsible.

All the drugs that the federal government is trying to push on kids are to benefit the pharmaceutical companies, not the kids.  Of course, parents should be responsible for making sure that their kids exercise and eat right, but it's naive to think that it's an either/or choice.  The government also has both legal and moral obligations to these kids.  In a nation that is as wealthy as the U.S., and that can squander half a trillion dollars a year on enriching the military-industrial elites, the least that it should do is provide education, adequate food and health care for every kid.  That means healthy food in the school cafeterias, no soda pop, candy and junk food, supervised physical education every day, and no behavior-modifying drugs except in the most rare, extreme cases.  Obese kids should receive special attention in terms of p.e. and diet, just as kids with learning disabilities receive special attention for academics.  It's in the long-term best interest of the nation to minimize the extremely costly health risks of obesity.  To ignore the problem is to be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Our current environment of fast paced, two working parents that become more and more impatient.... cannot be fixed with more laws. People looking for the fast easy way out is not the answer.. but many take it, and IT DOES HURT OUR CHILDREN.. It already has... Also .... look at the kids with guns now.. and parents and teachers without rights to discipline! The laws went screwy there!!!

Your awareness and concern does not surprise me.
And your other blog about A N Smith... I can't believe so much media and hype is wasted on that stuff... I've never understood that.

So glad to have music like yours.... too bad not everyone can feel what you do... That which inspires you, and that which we feel when we listen to it!

You are appreciated..

you're right, they seem to always be attacking the symptoms and not the problems (inactivity, poor eating habits, etc). Llow cal, low fat, low carb are all "snake oil" trends that have been very popular over the last forty years and we're bigger than ever.

I know reality show casting isn't the norm but they are illustrative.  I watch five minutes of Honey We're Killing the Kids and want to take away the parent's license to reproduce.

It's simple math really. You have to expend more than you take in.

Parents need to be informed and they need to take responsibility for their children.  Healthy lifestyles should be adapted by parents and children.  Children live by example. It is time to wake up America and stand for good old fashion values ~ but then who says we care ~ this is a me first world.

Omar best wishes to you and yours and may you find peace.  Keep shaking the trees.  Mystic

A view from over the ocean ...Scotland - United Kingdom_and our growing problem with obesity in children and adults, Pardon the Pun!!!!

It makes my blood boil and my heart weep at what we so easily have accepted as acceptable eating patterns in our generation and what we are teaching for the future!!!! Be it obesity or the size zero that is ruining our health and that of our children...for are we not teaching them both extremes....with no scale being tipped so further from one to the other!

We are taking what is now a major issue and drowning it in pills, lotions, potions, fad diets, low calorie, low fat, low salt options...off the shelves like some quick fix that will in inself make us as adults..feel better about our hectic day and not feeding our family the real bad stuff because some healthy option tag has told us so!!!!.... and we do this without the knowledge of how to read the breakdown of ingredients added preservatives, e mumbers, etc..on the back.

We had home economics when I was at school...twice a week ( for maybe 6 weeks out of 12) we were asked to take some ingredience eg: an onion, mushrooms and tomatoes...all the rest was provided by the school..we had a cooking lab and spent the last 2 hours at school making dinner we would go home with...homemade pizza or spaghetti bolognaise maybe a curry...or asked for a few eggs a cake or something ..I couldn't wait to bring it home I was so proud!!! Pizza is healthy if you know how!!!!

I also understood from an early age how meal time worked in my house...how my mums curry/sweet and sour was the best and wanted to recreate that when i left home because I wasn't scared of the kitchen.

Make food fun fot your children...not just something they get pulled away from the playstation for....find the time and educate in a fun and healthy way...is my food for thought...if your not sure what that is...then do your children the best gift in life and educate yourself!

It's not JUST goverment...(lazy asses if you let them....it won't get votes)
It's not JUST media...( although they do have a lot to answer for)
It's not JUST home

It's the whole thing...
Parents are without a doubt the driving force in this as they can view a prospective school on ability to educate and then turn them down on a health issue...but we need to make goverment, city goveners, school secters, health chiefs and the band of so many other ruling parties aware that we are looking in all aspects at our childrens best interests and this sadly has been missed in the last 2 decades.

We will only bring back sensible eating habits through education in the long term...please educate our children so they can bring something home....our generation is almost lost....find away for our children to educate us and want a better life tahn obesity!!!!

I am amazed at one of our tv chefs...JAMIE OLIVER... he did a school dinners program that would make you gasp at how many children couldn't recognise a raw vegetable...he then went on to do a program around Italy and on one occasion visited a school and did the same veg box questions ..amazing the difference absolutely outstanding...please view it if you can ...you will then understand exactly my post....www.jamieoliver.com

just adding...incase confused....yes the parents are to blame more than most...but a decade to late in re-education......lets not blame....rather find ways to tackle what is a problem not waste time in the drug store on a quick fix or a preteen diet thats going to fail!!!!!

WE ALL ARE! Wonderful blog, and it's time we stopped pointing fingers and instead each did our part.

OF COURSE the medical establishment and big pharma are to blame. They WANT fat kids. This is not a paranoid opinion, it is an absolute fact. The most outrageous wartime propaganda pales in comparison to the bill of goods- the outright lies and deception- we have been given. -P.S.- If you've seen "V for Vendetta" understand that this is not really a 'fictional' story about the future UK. It is actually a fairly accurate documentary of America TODAY. Look for the little reference to the bird flu when you watch! The truth is this HEALTHY KIDS THREATEN THE FUTURE ECONOMIC SECURITY OF BIG PHARMA. And this is a very bad thing, except for everyone NOT IN the medical establishment.

But, we allowed it to happen, through our apathy, fear, laziness, and willingness to buy into a pipe dream. Parents typically prefer to placate their kids than teach them healthy lessons. Wait! Most modern-day parents actually eat poorly themselves- why would they do different for their kids?

We as a society have allowed the powers of greed, through the media, to influence our beliefs and behaviors to the point where truth and lies, good and evil have become inexplicably confused. Today's children know this, especially the many who are indigos or crystals- an uncanny spiritual connection and great intuitive knowledge of truth. This is why kids are so 'screwed up' today. WE have created a screwed up world, and they know it. Is it any surprise that they don't simply accept the ignorant dogmas and stinkin' thinkin'?

Today's children innately know good from bad and right from wrong. We don't have to 'teach' them our own obsolete beliefs and paradigms. What we MUST do is provide an environment which allows them the freedom to make the choices which they already know are right.

Your blog was dead on. And we ALL share the responsibility to put the pieces back together.

I am a Social Worker and Counselor. What I have discovered is...the poor are having to leave their children for someone else to raise in order to pay the light bill. These children feel lost and disconnected to family...they act out. People don't have time to redirect children...they are tired from working two jobs and dealing with all the other issues. The wealthy are so caught up in determining what's going to fit into their agendas and they are raising narcissistic children. It's frightening.

I do believe advertising should be held accountable. Also, the FDA, the drug industry overall. The government (current Regime) is pushing people to earn more and pay later...meanwhile they are cutting programs like stem cell research, aid to children, foodstamps...

These drugs offered up to children are a temporary fix for a problem that is long term. It can be a short term problem if we get rid of the current regime and replace them with people who are interested in preventative measures. Solve problems and not make more or mask them with artificialness.

Wow what a topic many people have many thoughts and strong views about it. I believe that in our society today that it is two parted question that needs to be addressed. How we prevent future children from becoming obese and how do we help the ones that have become obese before the reach adulthood ?
To answer the first we must take a good look at why it is that these children are becoming obese in the first place and it seems there are several factors in this area.

1st More duel working parents, or single parent families are so tired when they come home from work that a fast food or pre prepared food is becoming the dinner of choice. These foods tend to not be high in nutritional facts and very high in fats and carbs and all the things that pack on the pounds. These dinners have replace the traditional home made and sit down meal once cooked by most families.

2nd On that same note many parents reward their children with sweets, or bribe their children with sweets when they want them to do something , I think we as a people need to learn how to reward our children differently and deal with teaching them other ways of dealing with what we want them to do other them bribing them with sweets.

3rd Plain and simple we learn as young as first and second grade basic food groups, we need to remember candy and sweets were not one of them! Kids learn by example and it starts at a early age and at home. If there are not many sweets at home then but lots of other things they will learn that.

4th Moderation is just as important as what we eat and this too goes hand and hand with my 3.

5th Is most likely the hardest one, exercise. Other than school a lot of children do not get any exercise at all. In a time when video games and television have taken over most of our lives we need to just turn them off and go for a walk.

Now as for what to do for the children that are all ready obese this is a little more tuff, I am not an expert on any of this and all is just my opinion! I do how ever believe that all of the above will help even these children that are all ready obese. I hate to think that medication is the end all to every problem these days but in some cases may help some children but I believe every child must be dealt with individually and monitored very carefully. I believe only that child and their family should make that decision not any one else. I do not believe that the government should have a say in it. And this new report card on weight that some schools have is horrendous!!! If the school nurse is inclined to say something once to the family out of concern that is one thing, but to continually send a report card home is wrong!

Fat Kids who is Responsible
Parents that is who, we are the ones that buy the crap that kids put in their mouth
most parents do it just to shut the kids up, then the kids learn that a tantrum gets them what they want. Parents are the ones that make the choice not the fast food or as I call it FAT FOOD!
The finger points to the parents plan and simple! Then it is yoru schools and fast food places
oh tv does not help either...

ok I am done big love eat veggies...

much love Nonya

Many wonderful prescription drugs can sometimes cause weird side effects depending on the person taking the drug. I would have to know each case personally to pass judgment on this story. First and foremost parents are responsible for their own children's healthy lifestyles. I'm all for medicine when it's really needed.
