Word has it Asphalt Valentine is ATL's finest alcohol fueled rock n' roll musical force to be reckoned with, including a drummer that could be easily mistaken for Nikki Sixx himself. Chavis Records has been pumping this band up for some time and now I know why.
At first listen, AV delivers straight ahead no frills hard rock and make no mistake about it, it's GOOD really GOOD! A great title, Strip Rock Roll kix it off with Never Lose it and the very radio friendly Dirty Little Secret. Vocalist Joe Flynt really shines on just about every track but really drives it home on Love & Gone and the title track Strip Rock Roll. SRR is a pure anthem song to me and sits up there with some of the best out there and definitely stands above some of the shit they are spawning off to the listening public these days. Be Your Drug picks up the tempo as Does Down To The Aces and Bombshell caps things off.
I was fortunate enough to pick up the bonus track On That Line. Turns out to be my favorite track on the whole disc. Don't get me wrong, SRR rocks and easily rivals similar acts like Buckcherry, Lynam, and of course Motley Crue. Hell, I'll say it they give their label mates Bulletboys new release a run for their money. I'm not stirring the pot but damn they bring it and do they ever deliver the goods.
I remember back when they went by the moniker Backseat Superstars and by the time the name change occurred, they dropped the less than adequate guitar players they had, and added the great guitar duo of Brett Ciaramella and Chris Meyer. These two players click and the combination works well. The rhythm section is rock solid and drummer Scozz is one helluva heavy skin pounder. I won't call out his resume but he's played with some of the best. Bassist Scott Clark plays in the pocket and doesn't over play which is nice by today's standards.
Asphalt Valentine overall is a solid band and Strip Rock Roll a very solid debut. Chavis Records did very well by this one. Production is very solid but could use a tad bit more bottom end and add a little volume to kick you in the teeth a tad more just like the good ole' arena rock days.
Overall two thumbs up and a solid rating from Lanman, I'm giving it to em'...
