Hello my friends!
We are just finishing up a three month excursion around Asia. It's been quite a fantastic voyage out here with Lindsay, Megan, JoJo, Aimee... and Matt Cartee joined us for a couple countries too. We've traveled together at times, and sometimes apart. It has been a real education this year... Here's a breif update on the trip... I write to you the day after Easter and the evening of Songkran, the Thai New Years and festival of water. People roam the streets with containers of water or water guns, or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. It's a time of cleansing... it's spiritual and really playful too! Thailand needs to play as they are going through a very difficult time of political upheaval. Thousands have take to the streets in protest of the current government who have responded by sending in soldiers and tanks. Hopefully peace will be restored very soon. So keep the Thai people in your thoughts of peace.
In February we were in Sri Lanka which has also suffered from years of civil unrest. It is such a beautiful country with some of the nicest people I have ever met. It is amazing how they maintain their spirits after suffering so much hardship. While we were there, the Tamil Tigers (the revolutionaries) were cornered and it looks as though this 25 year old conflict might come to an end. But as they were cornered, they acted desperately with suicide bombers. Two Tamil jets kamikazied into the capital city of Columbo just two days after we left. Some 100,000 civilians are trapped up in the conflict zone. We also saw first hand the terrible devistation left behind from the tsunami of 2004 which left 40,000 dead and 2.5 million displaced. We will be donating some of the Project Earth money to these causes. This was one of the most interesting countries I have ever been to.
In March, Megan went to volunteer with a program in Java, Indonesia teaching English to young muslim girls. We're now sponsoring a recycling program there as well. Meanwhile, the rest of us went to India. Lindsay and I went and rode camels through the desert of Rajasthan while JoJo and Aimee went to southern India to visit Amma Ji, the Hugging Guru. After this they traveled to see the Dalai Lama speak in northern India. (I'm sure they will be writing about their adventures here soon!)
I'm now in Thailand working on the new Wookie CD. I sit here meditating on all I have just seen, and the excitement of returning home and the year to come. I really look forward to seeing all of you and trading stories. Project Earth '09 is coming soon (tickets are on sale now, by the way) and I think it's going to be the best yet! I know people have already been planning and gathering intention back in Minneapolis. Along with Harvestfest and 10klf it's going to be a wonderful summer! I've just added a couple tracks I recorded recently just for fun up on the music section of the MySpace page. Take care everyboday and we'll see you very soon!
love, murphy
