Hey folks.....
Here's the second review of that cracking split cassette, Peace Paws! This time by www.indieworkshop.com...
The End Springs/The Wolf Tracks - Peace Paws Cassette (Not Not Fun)
I sincerely hope the day never comes when I get a "run-of-the-mill" release from Not Not Fun. Not only is this label consistently releasing wonderfully weird music from all over, but they win a blue ribbon for the most original and best packaging around. Peace Paws is nowhere near an exception to either of the aforementioned precedents this label has set. A regular plastic cassette case has never felt so special, as Not Not Fun has stenciled "Peace Paws" on the cover of each and created a unique closure out of twine and bark a wonderfully fitting aesthetic for the music contained on the plastic housed magnetic reels nestled within.
The guitar based compositions of The End Springs are first up and while it's not obsessively technical like much of the finger-picked guitar that seems to be floating around these days it has more soul than much of this style does. It is not the goal of these compositions to win you over with its mind-numbing technical prowess. While surely played by a talented and competent musician, these compositions are more about transcendence and transportation. The End Springs will fingerpick their way into your mind and take you on a journey to a land of pure tranquility.
While creating music with a different approach and sound, The Wolf Tracks compositions are in a similar spirit to those of The End Springs. The End Springs sounds could be viewed as the wind that carries the listener to a forest clearing where The Wolf Tracks reside to craft songs for you alone. Heartfelt lo-fi psychedelic folk with a slight tinge of pop, the compositions of Wolf Tracks revolve around delicate guitar work, clattering drum circle percussion and delicately sensitive vocals. A fantastic outing by both groups and another homerun release by Not Not Fun. (RB)
