Hello Friends,
I've just taken a break from grading papers, cleaning my little apartment to
make it ready for the return of my daughter from a semester away at college,
and doing some carework for a family member. As is my custom to relax for a few
minutes, I randomly pull a book from my shelf, open it, and read. I call it “book grazing.”
This is what I just found, and wanted to share it with you.
It reminds me why an organization like A Room of Her Own Foundation is
essential.
What I find remarkable about this piece is that it was written over 150 years
ago, and it resonates with me so keenly here, in the 21st Century. Perhaps it
shall with you, too.
"Women never have an half-hour in all their lives (except before and after
anybody is up in the house) that they can call their own, without fear of
offending or of hurting someone. Why do people sit up late, or, more rarely,
get up so early? Not because the day is not long enough, but because they have
'no time in the day to themselves'."
It is remarkable that Florence Nightingale speaks to us from a gulf of over
a century and that her words are still so relevant.
How many of you write late into the night or get up early in order to do so?
Imagine a room of your own and time and money to write!
Here is AROHO's mission statement. Take a look and see why we exist, and
consider supporting us in any way that you can. Maybe you’d like to honor a
creative woman in your life with a small donation.
