Current mood:  hopeful
Category: Life
My! That last screed attracted a bit of attention! I had a hit on my hands. You’d think this health-care issue hit home with people. It brought about some stimulating and – for the overwhelming most part – civil discourse. We need more of that.

Keeping it light this time, I have several items I’d like to bring to your attention, including a couple of questions I’d like to throw out there for your feedback. Thanks in advance for your help.

Firstly, DADDY is playing the Music City BBQ Festival at the Riverfront in Nashville this Saturday the 29th at 9:30 PM. Hope you can come out. If you’ve never seen DADDY (my band with Will Kimbrough), it’s a real sonic treat.

I’m trying to play Little Rock on the 24th of September. I’m trying specifically to get into Studio Joe, a coffee house. (www.studiojoe.biz) Anybody know the owner? Anybody care to camp out in his/her yard?

Secondly, Nathan is getting terrible mouth ulcers. He got that tendency from me and I got it from my mom. (I’ve got a slight one right now but poor Nathan’s current ulcer on the inside of his bottom lip dwarfs mine!) They’re very painful and make eating difficult.

Last night Nathan sat in bed pulling his bottom lip inside-out so the over-the-counter mouth-numbing potion could dry, and also because it just felt better. That’s no way to be. You can’t go through your day holding your bottom lip all the time.

The pediatrician says there’s nothing he can do. The kid drew a bad card from the DNA deck. Freaky deaky. Git along now.

We’ve (okay Beth) looked up stuff online and we know now that milk and yogurt help. But we don’t know much else.  Mom used to drink Knox gelatin. All I’ve ever known is the previously mentioned potion, and otherwise I’ve just dealt with it in my life.

But it’s different when it’s your boy. So I now reach out to you all for any knowledge or insight. Any help at all learning how to treat, or at least ameliorate, this malady would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Lastly, I’m in the middle of a 7-day herbal detox packet I bought at GNC with $30 of my England money.  (God, I love those days when I have thirty bucks!)

The herbs make me feel great but it’s two capsules and six horse pills a day. I ordinarily love pills. I could eat them out of a bowl with milk. But horse pills – and that many of them – is nothing I’d want to continue.

So I ask for your suggestions about a good daily herbal supplement (or two) I could add to my daily regimen, to go along with my sit-ups and pushups and no cigarettes, in my ‘fingernails on the cliff side’ struggle towards something approaching health.

I have to get a shower and go. Hope to see you at the Daddy show, or anywhere. Except when I’m in the shower. OTHER THAN THAT, anwhere!

God bless,

Tommy

..No salty stuff - like chips, my son had them.  Too much salt irritates the tender mouth membranes.  Wash hands often with soap and don't touch alot of stuff that is dusty and dirty.  "Keep your hands to yourself. "   Children want to touch everything and at school they pick up everyone's germs.

I've given up diet coke.  Was easier than I thought.  When your life is on the line, it is easy to give up vices.  Lots of raw, fresh food is best.  Hard to so sometimes, but best.

Write a cute song about singing at Studio Joe and send them a copy.  They might like it.

You in the shower,  me wanna see.  ....

When I was in college -- a long time ago now -- the athletic trainer used to have silver nitrate sticks, kind of like Q-tips, that would burn off mouth ulcers pretty quickly. They left a stain that washed away pretty quickly. I don't know if they're still in use, where you could get them, etc., but they work.

5-HTP........I think it's a miracle herb, probably because a dear friend who happens to be a world renowned phycologist told me it was a miracle herb, which was good enough for me.It's a mood improver.I can't tell you that everytime I pop one in,I immediately get in a better mood, but I can tell you that since adding it to my cereal 4 months ago,I've been through a break up,lost a drummer, been told I need singing lessons while on stage and seen Michael Jackson get 10 times more coverage than Americans dying in deserts and not once did I feel like jumping in front of a train.....and that's an improvement.

Ashley might have some suggestions. I will forward this to her and see what she has to say. I know that my dad always said to gargle with warm salt water. That takes away some of the pain as well. I am hoping to see you Saturday. Love a good DADDY show.

..Hope he feels better soon - no idea if you can get this in America but it works here - Corsodyl gel.

Nasty business.  No innuendo intended but when it's in your mouth it's always much bigger than it actually is.  Very unpleasant......

Hey Tommy, my art teacher in college said his wife got those bad and the Doc told her to take acedopholis tablets. He said it seemed to help. Anything with salt or high acidity just makes it hurt worse....but I suppose you know that. Hope that all helps if even a little. God bless ya Tommy.

I probably should have found this before I posted the last little bit, but here is a bit of information I found that might help some.
The species of ..Lactobacilli.. that inhabit the ......GI tract...... cause an increase of acidity. The bacteria do this by producing ......lactic acid...... from milk sugar (lactose). The increased acidity may promote the absorption of ......calcium......, as well as of some other minerals. Lowered pH also discourages the growth of many pathogenic species of bacteria and yeasts. The hydrogen peroxide produced by the acidophilus also helps to suppress pathogens.
....Other Uses......Acidophilus may possibly be helpful in the treatment of canker sores, fever blisters, hives, and adolescent ......acne.......
Here is the website I got this information from.
I think you can get the acidophilus in tablet form or liquid and can be found at the local health shop, heck...WalMart might even carry it,.I suppose it is worth a try.
God bless..

Your welcome. I hope it helps. I also have to tell you that the lyric "played twister in Detroit with a stripper 6 feet tall" has got to be one of the best ones I have ever heard. The Daddy album (we old folks still say album) and your last solo effort have really been getting the workout on my mp3 player. I hope you get to do jambodians this year. Keep on rockin!

The local country doc here in Nevada has his patients mix benadryl and maalox together in equal parts then paint the mixture on with a Q-tip. You can mix some anbesol or your topical anesthetic of choice (orajel, hurricaine, pain-a-lay, whatever) in equal parts to help numb. We call it Magic Mouthwash. Hope that helps a wee bit.

Hey Tommy,

I quit smoking cigarettes about two months ago. You're a pretty skinny guy but I'll bet you'll gain an extra few pounds from not smoking. So you'll need to exercise for sure. I use the MP3s from PersonalRunningTrainer.com. Super cheap downloads (99 cents each) Tells you when to run, stop running, when to walk and gradually eases you up into running a mile, and then up to 3 miles, etc. The only thing is the music really sucks. I've been tinkering with the idea of making my own running Mp3s with my own narration at intervals and music I actually like. Haven't done that yet though.

Supposedly milk thistle is good for helping out with the "toxins" from alcohol and cigarettes. It's a little expensive. I've been taking that. Who knows if it really works...

Congrats on kicking the cigs. That was probably the hardest thing I ever did in my life.
