Yep, you read that right. I don't know if any of you have heard of the
new CPSIA legislation. It is intended to stop businesses from selling
children's products with excessive levels of lead and phthalates. From
what I have read the ban on phthalates will be for toys, sleepwear, and
childcare items only. The lead ban will be for anything manufactured for
children up to age12. Anyone selling children's items will be required
to have each and every item tested for lead by a third party testing
lab.
So for me, that would be every different kind of ribbon,
every thread, every clip, every glue, ect at a cost of anywhere from
$100-$200 for EACH item.
Here is some info about it.
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.htmlSome
people are calling it National Bankruptcy Day, because of all the
businesses that will have to close their doors because they cannot
afford testing and can't sell any of their products.
http://nationalbankruptcyday.com/I
agree that they need to stop people from selling lead filled products
for children (I had to return a few of my kids toys for this exact
reason, Grrrrr), but there are no exceptions in this legislation for
items that have a very low risk of having lead in them. Like ribbon and
thread..... Plus most of the toys that were recalled for lead were not
made in the United States. They were made over seas. Anyways, it was
nice while it lasted, but as of February 10, 2008, I will most likely
have to close unless they change it somehow...

..
This
will not only affect businesses, but consumers as well because the
businesses who CAN afford to do the testing will have to raise prices
to cover the costs. Think about it, higher prices for each and
everything being sold in stores that is made for children 12 and under.
If it even remotely looks like it could be used for a child, it has to
be tested.
