The Scumfrog presents his new album “Friends with Boats Vol.2”, never in stores in October 2009
Sales of DJ-albums are under attack from all sides. Podcasts, free downloads, countless internet-radio stations, plus an ever-shrinking number of retailers who still sell dance music CDs. This trend may deter many DJs from release albums, but not The Scumfrog.
Having been on the forefront of the “free-download” movement since 2002, The Scumfrog continues to be an online music pioneer in 2009 with the unique release of his new album “Friends With Boats Vol.2"
The new album is a hybrid between a free promotional DJ-mix download and an official album-release. The mixed version of its 16 songs is available as a free MP3 download, but each individual track is listed with a direct link to Beatport.com where the songs are available for purchase.
To guarantee maximum exposure and sales for himself and the other artists on “Friends With Boats Vol.2”, the mix is available from one exclusive MySpace page where fans find themselves one click away from purchasing the featured songs on the mix, and from the pages of the artists involved.
The album features 16 selections of music that have played particularly special roles in the Scumfrog’s DJ sets over the past year, whether in Ibiza, the US, or Asia. Rather than a typical ‘hands-in-the-air’ peak time DJ Set, the result on “Friends With Boats Vol.2” is more of a collection of gems, perfect for sunsets, long drives, and of course... yachts.“
Friends With Boats Vol.2” will be heavily promoted at all Scumfrog gigs, on MySpace, Facebook and the most popular online dance music havens. The MySpace URL of the download page will be featured on all promotional materials for The Scumfrog between the release of the album (October 2009) and March 2010.
Each week between October 2009 and February 2010, one of the selections from the mix will be featured individually on The Scumfrog’s radio show/podcast Glam Scum International www.glamscum.com.
About the name of the compilation, The Scumfrog – fresh off his Grammy nominated collaboration with Cyndi Lauper – explains: “After a whole summer on Ibiza in 2007 and having spent many sunsets on various beautiful boats there, I decided to capture that summer with a mix titled “Friends With Boats”. Throughout 2008 “Friends With Boats” turned into the most downloaded mix I ever did. Now that I found myself playing in Ibiza again this past summer, the time has come for the much-awaited part 2, but this time not without generating as much exposure as possible for the artists that make this mix so special."
About the nature of this innovative form of music marketing he continues: “For most DJs, a commercial release of a compilation such as this is primarily to promote their DJ-brand, rather than to actually make money, since most of the revenue goes to the licensed artists on the album anyway. Even though (on Friends With Boats Vol.2) we officially licensed all the tracks from their respective labels, we opted not to re-release them on our own label, but rather to send fans and DJs straight to the source on their original labels, which I think is ultimately the best way to support the participating artists in this release.
“Friends With Boats” will be available until the Winter Music Conference of 2010 exclusively from MySpace.com/friendswithboats
