Music+Arts studio is pleased to announce the completion of sound mixing for Babyland, the most recent project from filmmakers Craig Leake and David Appleby.  Mixed by Leake and engineer/producer Kevin Houston, footage from the documentary will be televised on ABC on Friday, August 22 at 9 p.m., in a segment with anchor Elizabeth Vargas titled "A Special Edition of 20/20: Babyland."  Part of a larger effort that is slated for broadcast through PBS next year, the documentary reveals a heartbreaking situation facing Memphis.

Inspired by the ignorance of the public at large to the tragic infant mortality crisis, Leake and Appleby began work in 2006 on the project, whose title "Babyland" refers to the nickname some Memphians have given to the section of the Shelby County Cemetery where babies are buried.  Said Vargas, "It became important for Leake and Appleby to allow us with their camera to see for ourselves the brutal environment that surrounds so many of the young mothers most at risk, to meet the women behind the statistics, to put a human face on the numbers."  David Westin, President of ABC News, describes the documentary as, "A terrific example of what television journalism does so well -- revealing a story in one city that makes us think about our priorities across the nation. We are proud to be broadcasting this program and hope it will help stimulate an ongoing conversation."
