Current mood: sassy
I believe it was the Fresh Prince of Bel Air who sang, "….summah-summah-summah-TYEEEM…." indeed….with the harvest moon closing in around us here in the northwest, my mind is thrown back into a movie-montage of the awesome summer that up and went, like a fart in the wind.
MoZo's been takin' it hard to da streets the last 3 months – kickin' it with local farmers every week, playing birthday jams for cool, dancin' kids, serenading the tourists at Pike Place Market, opening Sustainable Capitol Hill, being part of the 4% (so sad) of lady musicians involved in the Uncle Tupelo vs. Neutral Milk Hotel night at the Tractor Tavern, teamin' up pride-style with Purty Mouth, spicing up some weddings, and hooking up with The Starlings for high adventure out in the northeast.
In June, I had a blast auditioning for KEXP's Roadhouse Jug Band the "Dexter Street Stompers". Unfortunately, after being chosen as the washboard player I had to decline the position since my damn musical date (not the dried-fruit) book was already filled with cool stuff on the days they were going to perform :P ….I never curse my sweet life.
Our first show at Le Pichet - a sweet, little French café in Belltown - made us feel like we were the breezy soundtrack in some super cool Goddard film. It's true there was no one smoking, and everything was in color….but it still totally felt that way…. especially after swappin' some Pride weekend sass with Purty Mouth at Conor Byrne the night before. Anywho, a few songs into our set we discover the hilarious placement of the chalkboard dessert menu behind us….the fresh-faced Brodie's call us "The Five-Dollar Pomme Frites" for the rest of the show. After the show my heart breaks twice-more – on the chalkboard covered table where Amy Brodie, Sophia, and Jen sat was a super rad chalk collage of creativity *~kAH-blooey* - soon lil' Sophia has my washboard slung around her neck and she's out on the sidewalks of 1st avenue, busking to the passers-by….i'm outta here, my heart can't take this….
In between some good times with Bobcat-Bob Rice at C&P coffee (and beyond) in West Seattle, and our sometimes more than weekly stints at the farmer's markets, July brought us another fun show with Purty Mouth. This time it was a burlesque, cowgirl, catwalk kind of night at the Highway 99 with the super-fly girl-troupe The Heavenly Spies. My personal favorite numbers included James Blond struttin' to PM's "Lonely, Alcoholic, Teenager in Love", and a killer "9 to 5" Dolly Parton striptease – heck yes!!
Long story short (too late!), our northeast journey with Joy Mills and Tom Parker was like being sent away to the coolest band camp ever. All the beauty of the capes, the amazing family and friends, the inspirational union of Sheila and Thaer, Jim Flint and his mighty palace….Joanna Maria and her mighty-mighty bass….
MoZo is headed down the coast to busk at the supremely rad Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (HSB!!!) in San Fran's Golden Gate Park this weekend. It's so exciting to be revisiting, what we both consider to be, one of the greatest damn gatherings around – no corporate sponsors, buskers are welcome, artists and musicians truly enjoying what they do, and it's frickin' free!! (except for the kettle korn) After some Moe Provencher shows in Berkeley and San Fran with Scott Simón, and another in LA, we will again get to see our friends Joy and Tom -this time in Albuquerque- where Moe will chill and watch the hot-air balloon festival with her longtime friends The Toths, and I'll hop on da short bus, pick up that handsome devil multi-instrumentalist Chad Hinman, and play with The Starlings all the way back home!
Check out Moe buskin' solo at the Ballard Farmers Market on Sundays, and get yer buns out to our big Halloween show on Friday Oct. 31st at the Conor Byrne Pub. Drinking, music, and costumes??? I know….right? MoZo, The Pennylifters, and The Starlings!!! Holy crap….looks like we need to add a "The" to our name….
Thanks to everyone who has made our life feel so damn warm – we are truly blessed - See ya out there!
