This is what Dustin from Room 710 has to say:

The Room 710, after being open for just 9 years has decided to close it doors as of
August 3
the venue, but as for what will exactly happen is undetermined. Rio of New
Orleans’ One Eyed Jacks and Rob from San Francisco’s The Matador are said to be
coming in to 710 to bring about its transformation. With One Eyed Jacks reputation
for bringing in national acts, there is the possibility of the Room 710’s location
becoming more competitive with Transmission and C3 Productions, who pretty much
hold the monopoly on larger, national acts that come through the city of Austin. The
lack of being able to compete and the downward trend in Austin’s City Council to do
everything it can to destroy the so-called Music Capital of the World’s music scene
are definitely factors in our closing. From a smoking ordinance that was meant to
bring out non-smokers, (Gee, where you at?) trying to reduce the city’s sound
ordinance to 70 DECIBALS!!!(ARE YOU FUCKING KIDING ME?), and closing off
the largest and only free parking on Red River; the city has done nothing but to help
bring about the music scene’s demise. Did the Teacher’s Retirement Center ever
consider charging $5 to park? With about 200 parking spots, which fill up easily
every Thursday through Saturday, they could generate about $2500-$3000 a week
to pay for security and insurance. So, when some crack head finally stabs someone,
the city would be protected. Unfortunately, that would take initiative and
intelligence; the two things you will never get from a government agency.

P.S. Thank you San Antonio for supporting the metal scene in Austin (God knows we
go to SA for our dose of metal), and everyone at The Edge, especially Toni for her
support.
rd, 2009. There is talk of outside investors coming in to help re-vamp/reboot
