Album Reviews — Bay City Rollers: Elevator, Richochet  and Voxx

Forgotten voices from the end of the universe, the final three Bay City Rollers albums were cut from an almost unrecognizable musical cloth, and so laden down with power-pop jewelry that if they'd only changed their name to Cheap Trick or something, they could have been huge all over again.

Hit-era vocalist Les McKeown was long gone by the time the Rollers cut these discs, but new boy Duncan Faure showed no fear in replacing him, as the band readjusted to life post-fame by unearthing all the musical tricks and twists that had previously been confined to B-sides alone. Across three discs that even the fans had forgotten, all making their CD debuts here, the Rollers step determinedly into their new world, still kicking out the tightly wrought choruses and fist-pumping melodies that made their name in the first half of the decade, but acting their age as well. Stuck for a rhyme, they write a different verse — in the past they'd have simply sung "shimmy shammy shong;" stuck for a theme, they follow their hearts, and turn out some surprisingly dramatic concoctions.

The semi-conceptual Elevator in particular is stunning, a rumination on the Rollers' founding ambition, compared to the fate they ultimately attained — and how swiftly it all fell away again. Ricochet is a sharp-heeled rocker and wraps up with a cover of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel," to remind us where they came from; and the farewell Voxx is the new-wave stomper (the back cover photo dates it dramatically), all sharp edges and edgy shards.

So three Bay City Rollers albums, but don't be fooled by the name. Three great albums.

I've seen this before and I was really pleased that it was such a positive review! I know that back in the old days, good reviews were very rare, if ever gotten.

I have to say that out of all of the Roller albums, Ricochet is one of my very favorites. I just got the CD after all of these years and I love it as much now as I did then.

My other favorite is Elevator and I still play it all of the time!

Thanks for posting this!

Duncan,

Im so glad that GOLDMINE put it in print !!! But I didnt need anyone to tell me how amazing they are! When elevator came out I was able to get it with a lot of hard work. But it blew me away!! I even got to see you in concert when that came out. As a matter of fact, Danny and I talked about the album way back then.

I could never get my hands on the last two until a few months ago.
and to this day that is all I play! I just love hearing it over and over all the amazing part that make up the songs!
all I can say is Duncan you Rock!!

Thanks for posting this Duncan. Yes, these albums certainly deserve all the praise in the world. It's sad to think that just because of a band's name that no one wanted to play or listen to the tracks which to this day still rock as hard as they did back then. Duncan I think you are an amazing musican as is the rest of the Roller Men and these will always be some of my favorite albums. The music is so much more polished than in the earlier albums. You were such a wonderful addition to the band and I still hope to meet you very soon. You are a wonderful friend and I can hardly wait for Kick of the Rhino to come out.
Thanks again for posting this and for bringing such wonderful music to all of us, and music that will rock forever! Hugs, faith ;)

Yes, very cool! It doesn't surprise me though that it is the great Dave Thompson who writes this. He's responsible for all the best '70s music reviews (including few about the Rollers) on the AMG (All Music Guide) website. Unfortunately though they still haven't asked him to rewrite the dreadful Rollers bio which appears on the same site and is just so unbelievably full of errors that it is nearly unreadable. ..On a brighter more personal note, I always get a kick out of seeing the cover of the 7T's "Voxx" CD on line somewhere since it is printed from my own Japanese LP copy of the album. See that Japanese (promo) sticker in the upper right hand corner? That's how I always know it's my album. 7T's had trouble locating a copy of this very rare LP so I loaned them my copy so they could take a picture of it. Apparently the original artwork is long since lost. Always expected them to airbrush out that sticker, though.

Lovely To See You

I have Elevator on LP and when I first heard it way back then, I thought wow, this is SO different from the previous albums but I LIKE IT! I was never able to find Voxx or Ricochet in the LP. When 7Ts released them on cd, I was so happy to be able to get them all. In fact Voxx has been playing in my car for months now. These albums were greatly underestimated, so to read this is just a bit more proof of what we already knew.

Three BRILLIANT albums. I was never all that crazy about Les's singing after the first album. With Duncan, they became great.
