Current mood:  anxious
with technology growing by leaps and bounds every day, people are able to download WHATEVER music they want for free, totally killing record sales.

I just wanted to know if there was anyone out there who still went and bought physical cd's.  If you do, does it make you want to get to know the band better? do you feel a better connection with the music?

tell me your thoughts!!

i always buy cds. physical or sometimes on itunes or amazon.
i love music so much and ive spent practically every cent i've
ever made on music or shows and such. stealing music is not
the way to go at all. if you love the music enough, spend the money
to help support the artist. generally the only way that artist
can continue to make the music you love is through your patronage
as a fan and by buying the actual music. not stealing it.

keep it up guys

I still buy the cds.  I like having the booklet, not the digital one.  I also like having the cd to put in my cd binder.  I think its better to get the actual cd because the bands worked so hard to make the music and spent the money to have it printed/pressed for people to buy, and not to just get it online or for free. I don't feel a difference from when I buy from iTunes and from when I buy it from a store.  I just know that bands work hard to make music for people to hear but they also need money to keep making music.  Hope that made sense.

Dude. Buying cd's is the best. With everything being so freakin digital, it's nice holding a physical item...and album art is awesome. ^_^

if the band is important enough to me or i just really want the cd cd, i will go out to the store and buy it. theres something nice about having the actual cd in hand and in your car rather than burning it on to a blank and listening to it. =]

Def.YES! Computers crash...then what??? Besides alot of work went into creating that CD!
Album Art is no longer...but at least with a CD you have an idea of what inspired it and everyone who
contributed! And it also supports the Artist making it!

Downloading it makes me feel like I don't actually own the CD.  I want a physical copy in front of me.  I like to see the jacket cover and the liner notes inside/photos.  Call me old school, but when you buy a physical copy THEN you really own it :}

I always like to buy a physical copy of a CD.  I'll pirate a CD if it's a well known band that it wouldn't hurt them if I downloaded their album.  and in other instances, I'll download a leaked album before it comes out to get familiar with the lyrics...example being, i downloaded a leaked version of New Found Glory's new album though I pre-ordered it from their site as well.  Also, if I know a band is coming through oklahoma city, I'll also download an album to get familiarized with it with full intention of buying the CD from them personally when they play here.   Then there was that one time that I pirated Bayside's latest album then when they came here, I told them that I downloaded it and they thanked me for giving their music a chance....definite cool points there! (they didn't have a copy of the CD, so I just bought some stuff and gave them an extra 10 bucks anyway)

I only want the actual CD. I hate when people download them for free. It does make me want to know the band better because you get to go through the booklet and actual read the lyrics and it just makes the whole CD more enjoyable. I feel like I can connect with the music on a whole new level. To me, it has more meaning and it's truly beautiful

i still buy cds all the time :] i love having a physical copy in addition to uploading those tracks onto my ipod. I do buy songs from iTunes too, but i prefer having an actual copy. i'm the person who actually reads the thank yous from the band, just to see who gets mentioned. I also look at who produced which tracks & who wrote the lyrics. Stuff like that does help know the band better, you get a sense of where they're coming from & the effort they put into making the record. I get how people think that they're entitled to get music for free just because it's available to them, but it's not fair to you guys, who took the time to record and publish your music so you could share it with us, the fans. Also, getting a physical copy shows you how the band wanted it to be seen, with all the artwork & everything. I still buy albums from iTunes, but i feel like having a physical copy is better. Maybe that's just me, who knows. But if you guys put the time & effort into making a great record for us to listen to, the least us fans can do is pay for it. <3

Yes, there is an option with today's technology to download whatever you want.
I always go and buy CDs. I think it's right to give the money to the band and labels because they deserve it. They're the ones who made it. Stealing is wrong. This world is a messed up place.

I do download, but I also buy albums.
I think that buying records is more personal and you share a better, stronger connection with the music.
The only reason I download is because I can't always afford to go out and buy the album. The majority of my music has come from albums though.
And also not all bands have put albums out yet, so it's sometimes hard to listen to some of my favorite bands.

but yeah, i feel alot more conected to the music when i buy it and physically own it,

The only time I buy music digitally is when there isn't a physical copy available. For example, I bought the Sweet Tease EP CD, but I bought The New You: The Old Us on iTunes. I really don't feel like a fan of someone's music unless I've paid them somehow.

I always buy hardcopies,
unless they don't have the hardcopy cause it's a super old EP or something,
then I search for it online until I find the hardcopy and order it. x]
Downloading music is my last resort, and even then, I still buy it.
I don't like downloading much, too easy to loose files.
Plus, I love album artwork, and reading all the thanks and credits in the cover,
I don't know why, I just love knowing all that stuff, cause some bands stick in random shit that is funny. x]
I saw your EP at Hot Topic and almost bought four, but I only have so much money. xD

I'm addicted to CDs, honestly. I have a huge collection and they're all organized alphabetically in my room. I feel like buying a physical CD in a store or at a show is a great way of letting the band know not only that you are interested in getting to know their music better, but also that there is a demand for their music out there. Buying music creates a demand for the music, and by illegally downloading music, the industry is dying. I know some people think "I don't want to buy a whole CD without knowing what's on it, because what if I just spent my money on a CD full of songs I don't like?" And the idea behind things like that MTV leak thing are really great because they create an anticipation and an opportunity for people to hear what they're going to get before they get it, so they can decide whether or not they actually want to spend the money on it.
I could rant about this stuff for hours, probably, so I should stop here. haha. Basically, CDs are amazing. That is all. :]

i buy cd's if i'm a big fan of the band. if they're a band i only like a few songs of, i get it on itunes. or if it's an ep i usually buy it online. but, i also love album art and pictures in the little booklet. really cool to see the art a band picks out! and isn't it crazy that cd's are considered 'old fashioned'?! i miss my casettes man! haha.

i always but the cd, i mean being able to like have the actually record in your hands with all the amazing art that goes into the work, is amazing. i don't know all my friends tell me to just buy them on itunes or whatever but i love being able to hold the record, and also to read the thanks and lyrics and all the other cool stuff. i have i think about 30 cds right now and i can honestly say that i'd much rather have the cd than a digital copy of it. plus you can loan it to friends and if they love it they go out and get there own (well that's what i do, some might burn it idk). to me having the actuall thing will always be better than a digital copy, plus i just love the look at the cover art and be like look at what i just bought it rocks!!! haha....  plus if you guys didn't get paid to do y'alls thing then that would keep y'all from being able to make even more awesome new music and albums.

Well I actually download a lot of music... and I don't feel "guilty" because I still buy physical albums... a lot of them... the reason I download music is because I can't wait
from not hearing the music...
So basically I download music while I'm saving money for buying the CD... and I prefer CD's because they involve more stuff... for example the cover and all of the art in the album is awesome to share... it helps to know more about the message the musicians want to give you... and I know that if we don't support the bands, music might fall... and that's hell to me

So PLEASE, go and buy physical albums!!!

I prefer to buy CDs at shows. It's weird. Actually, if it's a band I've never heard of and I enjoy their show, I'll buy a CD. And more often than not, if it's a band I've heard a lot of, I'll wait until I go to the show to check them out. Saves me the trouble of liking a band just to find out they're a little too addicted to the auto-tune. Like, this past weekend, I went and saw The Honorary Title, and opening up for him was Good Old War. I've heard a lot of amazing things about GOW, but I didn't want to check them out until I got to the show. And they were amazing.

But honestly, I prefer to spend money on a T-shirt than a CD if I really like a band. The music is all for my enjoyment, but the T-shirt is basically free advertising for them.

The first cd that I ever bought I relished that moment because I felt like I bought a part of that artist's soul almost; it's just a bit more personal when you go out and support the band/artist and buy the record. I have, unfortunately, got stuff off of the net cuz I dont have the money to buy the record mostly but I do have a collection of cd's still :)

I still buy CD's but obv I download a lot more music, I would have to say 30% of my music comes from CDs and 70% from downloads, this is mainly because I live in Latin America, and getting the original CDS from the bands I like is a bit difficult. but when I'm in the States I make sure to check whats new, whats out, and pre-check which of my bands have new (or partially-new) albums I would like. Honestly If I listen to a band on MySpace or so, and I like 3 or more songs, I buy the CD to get to know the band better, and at Warped when I saw TWTA I went and bought the CD right away to hear more, and to get to know them, so it's tricky<3

P.S: also when I have a bands CD I don't download the music into my computer, otherwise I wouldn't play the CD as much.

The way i see it. the more personal the music is to you the more likely you are to buy it. Every song these days has the ability to reach and connect people on a more personal level than others because face it, everyone at one time or another goes through the same things that the music talks about. Or its like a love story that gives people reason to believe fairy tales can happen. No matter what i know and everyone else knows stealing is wrong. But if a band takes their time out to just slap hands with the people around them, the ones who look up to them, then the chances are higher that person will happily do what they can to promote or help that band by buying their cd..  I know im rambling but think of it this way. Some people may download one or two of your songs on the internet and absolutely love it. Then the next time that youre in town they are more likely to go buy a ticket to your show where they may have the opportunity to legally buy a CD or will find out that you are now their favorite band and buy some merch. there because they had the chance to get on a more personal level and connect with you at that show. Revolving door. I still believe people downloading music illegally is hurting the music industry but listening to one or two songs on the radio really cant help you decide whether you want the entire album. Just connect with the people you meet, you guys are good at that. I met yall a while back. VEry down to earth. I almost bought a shirt but i spent my last bit of money to get my girlfriend and I into the show. My point, just dont lose your ability to connect with the people around you. It may be hard with a bunch of screaming girls in your face but the more people you meet, the better your chances of them actually paying money for the CD. -Jason

Here is the kicker for this awesome blog post...

about 95% of people have said physical CD is their preferred method of buying CD's. Downloads (legal and illegal) is the 2nd.

Why do you think iTunes is NOW the WORLD'S #1 retailer for music and CD sales are in the toilet. Nowadays you can come out with a record do 50k the first week and be in the top 5. A few years ago 50k wouldn't get you in the top 200.

Also, Do you think it'll recover where CD sales will grow?

I'm not down for buying physical CDs, just b/c I use an iPod, so I buy everything from iTunes. But illegal downloading is wack, I mean I suppose rip off the folks with millions and mansions (britney, eminem, jay z, etc...) but DON'T rip off these independent bands that are unsigned or that are on independent labels. DON'T rip off bands you aint hearing on the radio or seeing on Fuse or MTV, these bands make their living off of touring and their music. Most of them work odd jobs when off tour to save money for recording with the best producers. Four Letter Lie is signed to Victory Records but in their off time, their singer Brian Nagan still waits table in Minneapolis. BUY the music!

i hate buying through itunes. HATE. i'll only buy from there if there's no physical copies and i REALLY want the cd.

i feel like i'm the only person i know who still buys cds. i want all my favorite bands to be able to keep making music so i support them and buy their music. i don't understand how so many people can steal it and be okay with that!

that being said, i DO download illegally, but ONLY to hear what a cd sounds like first, if it's a band i don't know well. if i like it i will sure as hell go out and buy the cd!

good to see there are still some people left here that buy music!

I enjoy going to buy cds physically on relesase day cuz I feel it's part of showing support towards a band.

Unfortunately cd's are dying and these days stores only carry mainstream so even if I went out to buy a cd on its release day it's unlikely they'll have the band I want; that's what happened to me this week.
