by xLordSummerislex
Hailing from the Highlands, Gusto Mastivo are a new-ish band, formed by ex-members of Filthpact and TRIBE among others. As you'd probably expect, it's crust metal, though with more emphasis on the metal than their previous bands would lead you to expect, kind of like if a death metal band went d-beat, maybe with a hint of black metal in there, too, particularly in the vocals, with the punk influence keeping everything short, most of the sings clocking in at around the two minute mark.
Lyrically, they freely confess that there are other bands better at putting messages across, so they content themselves with singing about werewolves and wrestlers, which is fair enough in my book.
Overall, a solid & welcome debut.

7 tracks on this demo from Gusto Mastivo a band from north of Aberdeen, who seem to have formed from the ashes of Filthpact and Tribe. I am not aware of either of those previous bands, but this is pretty brutal stuff with tracks titles like "Die Like a Dog" and "Puke Whore". However, they mix all this standard genre imagery with a liberal splattering of samples and a song about Kendo Nagasaki, the wrestler from the 70's/80's. I was never much a fan of his, but this is a cracking song. They have a big fuzzy guitar sound and the dual screamy/growly vocals that is fairly common. In fact this could well be mistaken for an early Raging Speedhorn demo - and I must admit that this is growing on me quite a bit. Would like to see this band live as I'm not sure the recording does them complete justice.

GUSTO MASTIVO demo CD-R (-) With a cover that has a Corrosion of Conformity looking skull that's gotten the Motörhead treatment with added chains and stuff, it plants a certain idea on how this will sound long before placing the disc in the player. Now, this idea I got aren't exactly that close to the truth it turns out, even though these Scots very well might draw some inspiration from above mentioned bands. This is crusty metal, or metallic crust, or whatever, and it's smelly, ugly, and quite enjoyable I quickly learn as the ride goes on through the seven tracks. I guess I could have written this off pretty quick as I really can't point out anything specifically special about these tracks to be honest, but there's still something in their delivery and intensity that grabs hold and makes it interesting enough to make me want to hear it again. It's just raw music played without pretensions - refreshing in its primitive approach. The band has previous members of Filthpact and T.R.I.B.E. and without saying too much I guess Gusto Mastivo sounds somewhat like a mix of the two at times. The band claims to be old enough to know what's right and wrong in the world and there are others who are better at translating this into punk rock roaring, so instead they choose to sing about 70's wresting heroes, werewolves, driving Japanese cars way too fast etc. Why not I say, it's about as effective as telling the world that war is bad in three point five songs on each record. MYSPACE BAND REVIEW
GUSTO MASTIVO http://www.myspace.com/gustomastivoReviewed by: MALEKSurprising as it is sometimes when a band have an almost comical name and yet manage to actually provide you with the musical sustinance to back it up, that it is still somewhat shocking after the revelation has been made that the band actually do not stink. I think this is possibly because people sometimes don't really realise how much impact their name has on the band's image. A good example would be Dr Slaggleberry - a band you would generally assume would be a stupid project, actually turned out brilliantly... so forgive me for thinking that "Gusto Mastivo" with their self professed genre's of "Punk/Metal/Grindcore" would not exactly stir that much emotion in me. Well, needless to say - i was wrong! "Gusto" manage to mix some great styles together here very well. It does almost seem silly to have listed punk AND grindcore together in their genre listings, considering that grind has a reasonable background in a more punky tradition, but this band actually do seem to have a stronger punk tint than you would normally think. The music is brilliantly groove-laden and has that perfect amount of speed and nastiness to boot and the production isn't all that terrible either - quite uncommon for the average unsigned grind act i'm sure you'll agree. I think, all in all, its probably a good thing the band have a name like they do (Oh i know, shut up about the name already for fuck sake Malek) because it actually does show that this band do really have a sense of fun about them. Grindcore is an interesting genre like that - to the laymen, or the untrained ear, you could quite easily see it as sounding very much like death metal - but what actually is happening is a much more complex mix of grooves that are just not present in a lot of death. Grind also has a more punky approach - especially with drums. This is probably the reason I seem to enjoy grindcore a little more than I do death metal, and this is also the thing this band do so well. Great work dudes, a good start to my evening of reviews! Chin chin! *sips on wine* 8/10Malek |
