this is a column I wrote for the Bargain Hunter paper

OK, here we are boys and girls, another edition of the Bargain Hunter Entertainment News. Featuring Bob Harris and yours truly Benny Speer. He is known as the oldest Rolling Stone fan, the guy who tried out for Deal or No Deal and the guy who is trying to find someone to help him write a book about his life story in the Detroit entertainment scene. I am known as the guitar player in Benny and the Jets Band, the guy who won the best beard in America contest. Yes the guy who went to the Superbowl in Miami or like I often say, "From the Superbowl in Miami to the Thunderbowl in Allen Park, Michigan." Where Benny and the Jets play every Thursday night. You remember the famous Thunderbowl on Allen Road in Allen Park Michigan. They had that show Bowling for Dollars. Sounds like something that could be mentioned in Bob's Book.

Finding someone to help write a book might be a hard thing to do. Sounds like a lot of fun, but when it gets down to the typing, organizing, making it happen, it really could be a tall order. But if there was someone, maybe a collage student or someone who has previously written a book, our fearless leader would like to talk to them.

Not only does Bob have a great story, he met the Rolling Stones, managed bands, ran teen clubs, teen newspapers, promoted concerts, he has the photos to prove it. Photos of Sonny and Cher, Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, Four Tops, Temptations, Bob Hope, Tom Jones, Lucille Ball, the list goes on and on. Shows with Roben Symore, Mr. Bellvadear, Russ Gibb, Geno Washington, Ernie Harwell, Deno Day and TV newsman Rich Fisher. Yes there is a story to be told, books to be sold.

Another Story that needs to be told is my friend JT the BRICK. JT does a national FOX sports radio show heard in 300 cites. He has been promoting a segment called MYSPACE MONDAY. Where he plays music from bands myspace sites. Last week he played the Stunn Gunn, Six Pack Jack and the Holing Dioblos.
Holing Dioblos often called the best band in Detroit have been playing Sunday nights at Dino's on Woodward in Ferndale. The band features Tito on vocals, Johnny B formerly of Mitch Ryder and the Rockets on Drums and Jimmy Bones of the Kid Rock band on Keyboards. You can hear JT's show every Monday 11p till 2a on WDFN am1130 see his www.myspace.com/JTtheBrick to get your band on his show. Look for upcoming shows to feature the Bluesairmen, Ray Street Park, Mike Katon, Robert Noll, Broadzilla, MC Dale Baker, MC Lazy Boy, Bridge, Josh Grasin, Flask, Detroit Cobras, Mega 80s, Orbitsons, Bump, Lemon James, Illegal, War Machine, Killin Machine and School of Rock guitarist Joey Gaytoes.

More stories, Arlen formerly of Salem Witchcraft has been hanging out with Bill Blackwell one of Kid Rocks and Bob Seger's people. Mr. Blackwell has known Arlen for years and always believed Arlen was one of the best rock singers in the world. Arlen has been spending some time locally with Moe the former Salem drummer and some of the guys from Sweet Crystal and the Look bands. Who knows where a project like this could end up. See them Thursdays at a new club in downtown Northville called NoMi's. Watch for an upcoming event at the historical Wayne Theater. For more information see www.myspace.com/arlenrocks.

MR. Bob also say's keep an eye out for JR's Deno the Dinasour statue and try JR's bar and grill has the best pizza and calzone. Buck's still the best place for a game or pool and a beer. Taylor Trade Center has live music shows on Fridays. Last Lap has a big ELVIS show on the 14th. R&R Bar has the best nachos. Amatea's is the best place for all your family dinners.

For more information or hire the band ($200) for your club, party or event contact Benny call 313 730 1627 via e-mail benejets@ao.com see the web sites www.bennyandthejets.com and www.myspace.com/bennyandthejets  and
yes we still play the Wayne Road Pub every Tuesday (17 YEARS)

thursday at thunderbowl was fun

friday at Allen Park carnaval was interesting
we saw that Walinda lady clime a 70 foot pole

Sat at turtle-lake.com was great ...
like hug said very nice day not a cloud in the sky, some very nice cars trying to think of the highlight song??
might have been when this hot naked blond got in her blue ford convertable and drove pasted the stage as we were singin mustang sally?

(How often you see a naked blond driving a convertable?)

then we rased to the Ramada Inn in Taylor ... they had some luau going on in the banquett room over flowing into the bar so they had us set up on the restaurant side ... which like Lorna said really was kind of nice (might have been our biggest night ever there???)

Sunday at Jacks bar in Pontiac was kind of slow
might have been because of the extra nice day???
(might have been our slowest night ever, go figure)

OOOOOOOOOOH YA ... check out SUNDAYS Detroit Free Press
page 2 .. about the Doctor of Doo Wop (my radio show partner) .... pretty damn cool (maybe Deb find a link???)

Wednesday June 13th we are doing the radio show from live remote at Cheeze Burger Cheeze Burger on Hagerty Road between 6 and 7 mile Roads .... Hear the show Wednesday 5 till 7pm actually we are going to go till 9pm with ERNIE's Crusing with the crew... stop in or listen via www.wpon.com

we get a lot of former Detroiters stoping by ....

BENNY and the Jets
a Detroit Rock and Roll Band

You Know You're From Detroit If . .

You used a pillowcase to go "begging" on Halloween, and you yelled, "Help
the Poor!" at every door. ("Help the poor, my pants are tore, I need some
money to buy some more.") OR TRICK OR TREAT, SMELL MY FEET, GIVE ME SOMETHING GOOD TO EAT

You remember what Devil's Night used to be.

You remember the huge elm trees forming lush green tunnels over many Detroit streets in the summertime. Or when they'd come around to spray and tell you to stay in the house. And, the autumn smell of burning leaves, after you'd rake huge piles to the curb for burning.

You remember honking your horn as you went through the tunnel to Belle Isle at the end of East Grand Blvd.Where it went under Jefferson Avenue, even though the sign at the entrance read "Don't Sound Horn." And you remember the submarine that was tied up at the Brodhead Naval Armory alongside the Belle Isle Bridge.

You took a class trip or a moonlight cruise to Bob-Lo with Captain Bob-Lo..

You remember running home from school so you could have lunch with Soupy Sales.

You rode a bus to Edgewater Amusement Park to ride the wooden roller coaster (again and again) or the Salt & Pepper Shaker. You remember "A fantabulous day for the family, at fantabulous Edgewater Park." P. O.. P. Meant pay one price.

Your Mom packed the car with kids, swimsuits, towels, and peanut butter and
jelly sandwiches to spend the day at Metropolitan Beach.

You played in the "Big Ditch" as I-94 was being built.

You played tennis on Belle Isle's courts, or golfed at their par 3 course, both lit after dark. Or went ice-skating, or for a horseback or canoe ride, rode in a pony-drawn carriage, hand-fed the animals at the zoo, visited the aquarium (remember the teepee), or attended an event at the Casino.

You rode the big white roller coaster or found your way out of the Fun House
at Jefferson Beach Amusement Park.

Took a day trip and drove way out to Walled Lake Amusement Park where they had lots of rides, a roller coaster, and to the Walled Lake Casino for
dancing.

When ice-skating was outdoors and Palmer Park or Belle Isle was the place to do it. You also remember its tennis courts, wading pool, golf, ice-skating,
and horse and buggy rides.

Or how about the Detroit Firefighters working the crowds at the fireworks,
selling tickets to their Field Day, and giving out firecrackers to the kids.

You rode a streetc ar that ran on tracks down the center of Gratiot, Woodward, Jefferson or Michigan Avenue. Or the electric buses on Warren and Grand River.

You remember how all of the lights from the auto dealerships lit up Gratiot
and Livernois -- and that they only sold American-made cars.

You remember when Eastland, Wonderland and Northland Malls were open, not enclosed. And when Wonderland had animals in circular cages.

You know how to pronounce Gratiot and Schoenherr and Cadieux.

If someone told you it's on Outer Drive, you knew to consult a map first.

You thought driving to Southfield was going "out to the country."

You checked out books for two weeks from the Bookmobile that came to your
elementary school once a week.

You vividly recall the mineral bath smell (rotten eggs) when you drove
through Mt. Clemens.

You bought candy and nuts from window-lined, walk-around counters and wooden floors at S. S. K resge or Woolworth's ("dime" stores).

You went to Sock Hops at Notre Dame high school on a Friday night where you heard Stevie Wonder, Bob Seger and the Last Herd, or the Rationals.

You drank Faygo, Towne Club, Grilli's, Oso, or Atlas pop (we never heard it
called "soda").

Your Mom saved Top Value, Holden Red, S&H Green or Gold Bell stamps.

Cunningham Drug Stores soda fountain and their raspberry phosphate.

Your school took a bus trip to the cider mill (with donuts and cider after
the tour), or to Kellogg's in Battle Creek.

Silverstein's was the candy store of Army and Navy surplus stuff.

You had a subscription to the three Detroit newspapers, including The
Detroit Times.

You remember news anchor Jac LeGoff who eventually worked at every TV
station around Detroit.

You visited the Wonder Bread Bakery and got to take home a mini-loaf of
bread (but you weren't cool unless you ate Silver cup bread).

You had a Shaffer's or Awrey's breadman and a Brickley's milkman. Or a Twin Pines milkman, a Jewel Coffee man, and a Fuller Brush man (and they were always men).

You remember Pure, Penzoil, Speedway 79, Monkey, Dance, Purple Martin,
Sinclair, Danny's Dino, Kayo and Gulf gas stations, and when "gas wars"
meant 17 cents a gallon.

You remember Primo's Pizza, Carbone's Pizza, Red Barn, Powers, Henry's,
Herc's Beef Buffet, Cupid's, Tom's Tavern, Ted's 5x5, Totem Pole, Red Devil,
Marcus, or Richard's drive-in. (car-feteria).

You attended a wedding reception or a banquet at Roma Hall.

You attended "Wendy Ward's Charm School " at Montgomery Ward.

You remember when Ben's Hi-Chaperelle and Watt's Club Mozambique were the places to go to catch Motown acts.

Every year when the Blue Angels came to Willow Run Airport.

Or always wished you could be one of the Hudson's Teen Panel girls whose
pictures hung on the wall in the Juniors Department.

You had friends or relatives who could get you into Camp Dearborn for the
canteen dances in the summer and to go swimming. Or the pond at Belle Isle
near the Conservatory where the sign warned you not to touch the water.

You had a reverb unit installed in your car at Mickey Shorr's or Crazy
Jack's (a. k. a Michigan Mobile Radio or MMR) on Livernois.

You remember the riots of 1967.

When the bleacher seats at Briggs Stadium were only $2.00 to watch the
Detroit Lions play. And when they won the National Football Championship
(before there were Super Bowls) in 1957 against the Cleveland Browns, 59-14.

And when the Red Wings won all those Stanley Cups in the 1950s, and balcony seats at Olympia Stadium were only $1.25!

You remember Detroit wrestlers Dick the Bruiser, Bobo Brazil, Leaping Larry
Chene, Wild Bull Curry, Ernie "The Cat" Ladd, Lord Athol Layton, Ed ward "The Sheik" Farhat, Fritz Von Erich, George "The Animal" Steele and Johnny
Valentine.

You remember bowling for a quarter a game at Chandler Park Lanes, Falcon
Lanes (next to The Ginos/Falcon Showbar), Parkside, Woods, Ritter's or Ritz
bowling alleys.

You worked at Detroit Bank & Trust, Manufacturers National Bank, Bank of the Commonwealth, City National Bank, or National Bank of Detroit.

You "parked" at Belle Isle, either to watch the color-changing waterfall or
the submarine races -- depending on how old you were and who you were with! You were in awe of the Big Stove on East Jefferson at the entrance to Belle Isle (before it was moved to State Fairgrounds entrance).

You remember your Mom taking your burned-out lightbulbs to Detroit Edison to exchange for new ones.

You remember the J. L. Hudson Co. (known to us as just " Hudson's") building
on Woodward Avethat occupied an entire city block. And you remember the white-gloved elevator attendants operating the expandable gate and lever- locked door, and just before letting you out, she would call out the names of the various departments on that floor.

You ate a Maurice Salad at a J. L. Hudson's cafeteria.

You went shopping during Downtown Detroit Days.

You remember Women's Hospital before it became Hutzel Hospital.

You remember that Hudson's hung a HUGE American flag on the front of the
building every 4th of July.

You would ride the bus downtown at Christmas and stand in line at Hudson's
amid a fabulous winding, animated Toyland just to see Santa.

Or you remember going to see Santa Claus at the Northland Mall igloos
because it was televised and you hoped your friends would see you.

Thanksgiving was not complete unless first you went to the Hudson's Parade,
then to watch the Detroit Lions play the Green Bay Packers (always the
Packer s back then) at Briggs (later Tiger) Stadium.

You know guys who put up big antennas so they could pull in the Lions home
games on channel 6 out of Lansing.

You watched the 'old guys' play bocce ball at Buddy's Rendezvous Pizza or
sang the Schnitzelbank song at the Dakota Inn.

You remember when Mayor Cavanaugh would give Santa and Christmas Carole (who always looked like she should be freezing in her short red velvet outfit trimmed with white fur) the keys to the city at the end of every parade.

You remember the Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.

You remember watching the Detroit Pistons and the WHA Michigan Stags hockey games at Cobo Arena.

How about Al Ackerman ringing Big Al's bell for the Sports Hero of the Day.

And watching Cadillacs being made on Clark Street.

Or the giant, three-dimensional "Elsie" the Borden Cow (head) located on the
side of the Ira Wilson Dairy off the I-94 service drive. (Now, it only says "ILSON" -- much of the stack has been taken down).

Going to the Better Made potato chip factory and getting small bags of brown
chips or shoe strings before going to the Jewel movie theater.

You remember hearing the air raid sirens on Saturday at 1 p. m.

You remember the RAF bomber flying from England in 1962 that exploded over the Detroit River near Grosse Pointe Park.

Your neighborhood had a man who came down the alley on his horse-drawn
carriage honking his horn and collecting the stuff no one wanted, like
bicycle parts, wheel rims, etc., and he was called the "sheeny man."

Or the guy who came through your neighborhood on a bike to sharpen your
scissors, etc.

You remember the ice man delivering ice to be placed in your ice box (we
didn't have refrigerators then) after you placed a card in your front window
indicating whether you wanted 25-, 50-, 75-, or 100-pound blo cks.

You remember the milkman delivering milk and cream in glass bottles from a
horse-drawn vehicle.

You remember going to the drive-in and getting blasted by mosquito spray
from the back of a pickup truck that drove up and down the lanes.

You ordered Cold Duck at the Ponchartrain Wine Cellars (the restaurant/bar
where it was invented) and enjoyed a frog leg dinner.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

I got an e-mail from my friend blues singer Paul Miles www.myspace.com/pauljmilesmusic
he asked about my pal JT the BRICK and how that sports radio contest was going

JT won that last round, which put in the finals. That last round was really probably the tuffest
he beat David Stine who had beat Jim Rome in the round before. ( I think Rome may have been the favorite)
but really every well known sports radio host was in this contest and anyone of them could have won.

Many thanks to my friends who took the time to help me help JT to this final round ....

This guy IsI3158 keeps emailing me stuff ??? but I like Elephants so I read this one In 1986, Dan Harrison

was on holiday in Kenya after graduating

from Northwestern University.

On a hike through the bush, he came across

a young bull elephant standing with one leg

raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed,

so Dan approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee and inspected the

elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood

deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Dan worked

the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the

elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather

curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Dan stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled.

Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

Dan never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Dan was walking through the Chicago Zoo

with his teenaged son.

As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures

turned and walked over to near where Dan and his son Dan Jr.

were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Dan, lifted its front foot

off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several

times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Dan couldn't help

wondering if this was the same elephant.

Dan summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and

made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the

elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted

again, wrapped its trunk around one of Dan's legs and slammed

him against the railing, killing him instantly .

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

This is a song from the first Benny and the Jets LP we recorded in the 70s
(love you to hear it or even add it) ... we were opening for Chubby Checker
back then and I kind of wrote the song for him ... he didn't really want to mess with his HIT version ... so we recorded it ....

I have a fond memory of driving over the Ambassador bridge (Detroit to Canada) listening to CKLW the BIG 8 AM rock station (the one Seger sang about in the song Rosalee) and all of a sudden hearing the Christmas Twist being played on C K L W ... WOW very hard back then to get played on CK ... I guess we lucked out because of the Christmas connection ... but it was very coo ... I am lucky I didn't drive off the bridge ... LOL

I became a teenager in the right place at the right

time.
Although you could count on one hand the number

of blacks enrolled at Woodrow Wilson Jr.
High or

Pasadena High School, Los Angeles County had large

enough a black population to justify the existence of

radio shows that played "the very best in Negro

entertainment" around the clock.
One such show was

Hunter Hancock's afternoon "Harlematinee" on KFVD.

I'd discovered this radio show in Jr. High.
In 1952,

when I turned 13, I already was part of a growing

vanguard of white kids listening to black music, and

we were going to change the popular music industry

forever.
I was on the front lines for the birth of

rock-n-roll.

But as a pre-teen and teenager, I didn't look like

anyone in "Grease" or on "Happy Days.
" I didn't even

smoke, let alone roll a cigarette pack up the sleeve

of a T-shirt. I didn't own a car, let alone a hot rod.

My hair was in a butch, not a flat top.
Hell, I didn't

even date.
I was a science nerd -- but boy did I love

listening to black music on Hunter Hancock's radio

show, from Little Water to Muddy Waters, from The

Clovers to The Robins to The Flamingos, from the

wailing sax of Earl Bostic to the bending guitar notes

of young B.B. "Blues Boy" King.

To this day I can remember Hancock's signature

introduction: "From blues to ballads, from bebop to

boogie, featuring the very best in Negro

entertainment.
" Late at night, there was a more risque

radio show, "Harlem Hit Parade" on KRKD, which was

hosted by a DJ who called himself "Huggy Boy" and

sponsored by an all-night record store, Dolphin's of

Hollywood.

In this literal and explicit age, when the life of the

imagination is so impoverished that nothing is left to

it, anyone under 55 may find it hard to comprehend how

risque the lyrics of some early 50s R&B songs were and

how titillating they became to white teenagers and

pre-teens.
Black artists were attracting a growing,

white, teenage audience with songs that rattled the

walls of decency, and the times they were a-changin'.

In 1951 came "Sixty Minute Man" by Billy Ward and The

Dominoes.
This bragging confession by a stud included

lines like "they call me Lovin' Dan; I rock 'em, roll

'em, all night long, I'm the Sixty Minute Man.
" This

great lover would make women holler "please don't

stop!" and his seductive ways would end with "fifteen

minutes of teasin', fifteen minutes of squeezin', and

fifteen minutes of blowin' my top.
"

Television was in its infancy, and there was no talk

show on which a Dr.
Ruth could explicate the meaning

of "blowin' my top.
" Virgin teenagers had to imagine

this experience themselves and, believe me, the result

was considerably more titillating than anything Dr.

Ruth would have to say.

The next year The Clovers released "One Mint Julep.
"

Here we learned that seduction could have unfortunate

consequences: "I'm through with flirtin' and drinkin'

whiskey, I got six extra children from a-gettin'

frisky" and "one mint julep was the cause of it all.
"

1954 is the pivotal year in the history of

rock-n-roll.
Most pop music historians credit

"Sh-Boom" by The Chords as being the first rock-n-roll

single.
This song by a black group attracted such a

substantial white teenage audience that it was

"covered" by a white group, which typically drained

the arrangement of all its sensual energy and began a

process of de-sexualizing early black rock-n-roll with

white cover records that reached its absurd extreme

when Pat Boone started covering the hits of Little

Richard.

But in 1954 the sound was still black.
That same year

in Memphis, Sam Phillips of Sun Records, who had been

looking for a white singer with the black sound and

black feel, signed Elvis Presley.
(You can hear Elvis'

early Sun recordings, like "That's Alright Mama" and

"Mystery Train," at

http://www.elvispresleyonline.com/html/elvis_discography.html).

To "hip" white teenagers, however, 1954 was most

remembered not for "Sh-Boom" or Elvis but for three

extraordinary records released by Hank Ballard and The

Midnighters: "Work With Me Annie," "Sexy Ways," and

"Annie Had A Baby.
"

In "Work With Me Annie," the lyric "let's get it while

the gettin' is good" was considered so dirty, so

obscene, that for a time the song was banned from the

airways in Los Angeles.
This was the situation when I

heard Huggy Boy announce on his early morning radio

show that, the law be damned, next week at 3 a.m.
he

was going to play "Work with Me, Annie" on the air!

(You can hear "Work With Me Annie" online at

http://www.iei.net/~drifter/blues/ballard.html).

My Jr. High was abuzz with the news.
Would Huggy Boy

really dare to do this? Of course, those of us who

were hip (and I was one hip nerd) knew the song

because we owned a 78 rpm record of it or at least had

heard it on the radio before it was banned.
And no

wonder it was banned: "Annie please don't cheat, Give

me all my meat!" My God, who had ever heard anything

so sexually explicit on the radio before?

Hank Ballard and The Midnighters, more than any other

black group in the early 1950s, had a reputation for

being sexual and dangerous.
Their songs were full of

references to, well, SEX.
"Sexy Ways" had the

mind-boggling lyric: "In the hall, on the wall; Dance

baby dance, now crawl crawl crawl!," followed by so

many repetitions of "Oh baby; Do it, baby" that a

teenager could have a premature coronary just from

imagining the activity being described.
Ballard's

quivering voice suggested more sexual abandon than

anyone before Little Richard.
Hank Ballard and The

Midnighters would have made "The Star Spangled Banner"

sound sexual.

Despite being banned, "Work With Me, Annie" was so

popular -- at the time it was referred to as the Negro

National Anthem -- that it inspired a sequel, "Annie

Had A Baby.
" This song was filled with predictions

about male-female relationships that many male

teenagers would encounter in the very near future:

"She sings to the baby instead of me, Clings to the

baby instead of me; Now it's clear and it's understood

-- That's what happens when the gettin' gets good!

Annie had a baby, can't work no more.
"

And so we spent a long week at Wilson Jr.
High in

1954, the tension mounting, as we awaited the early

morning when Huggy Boy was going to defy the law and

put Annie back on the airways.
Would he chicken out at

the last minute? One day a rumor spread around school

that Huggy Boy had been fired.
In my room, I

nervously waited up late for his show to start -- and

felt incredible relief to hear his usual opening

banter, "This is Dick Hugg -- Huggy Boy!"

On the morning in question, I had no trouble getting

up at 3 a.m.
I often set my alarm for 3 in order to

get up and look at the stars with my telescope.

Sometimes I would take a portable radio outside with

me, listening to Huggy Boy at low volume as I

star-gazed.
This night, however, I stayed in bed,

turning on the show around 2 and waiting for the

count-down to the magic hour.

As 3 approached, it became clear that he was going to

go through with it; at least, he kept talking about

it.
And then the hour came, and it really happened:

the introductory guitar riff played, Hank Ballard sang

"Work with me, Annie" in a voice drooling with sex,

and the Midnighters followed with their suggestive

chorus, "Ah-oom, ah-oom.
" Jesus Christ, Huggy Boy was

breaking the law just like he said he would!

I wanted to call up one of my nerd friends to make

sure he was listening.
I wanted to shout at the top of

my lungs -- without waking my parents.
I wanted to

masturbate.
Maybe I would have gotten around to the

latter if an unexpected sound hadn't come from the

radio.

Someone was pounding on a door! Huggy Boy explained

that the police were outside, trying to break into his

studio! And then there was a crash, a confusion of

noise suggesting breaking furniture ... and then the

radio show was off the air! Huggy Boy had been

arrested, right on the radio!

It doesn't matter that later, as an adult, I realized

this was all staged.
And good radio theater it was,

too.
But at the time it all made perfect sense because

there was, in fact, something deliciously wicked about

listening to the songs of Hank Ballard and The

Midnighters.
The sizzling abandon in these songs was

as different from Patti Page's proper singing about

doggies in the window as the chaotic mess in my room

was from the perfectly made bedspread in my parents'

bedroom.
(Of course, no teenager could imagine his

parents making love.
)

In fact, rock-n-roll was going to clean up its act as

it became more and more popular in the late-50s.
The

infamous gyrations of Elvis' hips were far less risque

than the quivering sexuality in Hank Ballard's voice,

but by Elvis -- who burst upon the scene in 1956 after

Phillips sold his contract to RCA, where Elvis quickly

recorded "Heartbreak Hotel" and became a national icon

-- there was such a large, white, teenage audience for

rock-n-roll that the less threatening gestures of

Elvis caused much more uproar than the raw sexuality

of early 50s R&B.
Why? Probably because the white

audience was small and restricted to large urban

centers in the early 50s.
By 1955, kids everywhere,

from Montana to Rhode Island, were getting off on

rock-n-roll, and to some critics this defined a

cultural crisis.
At more than one radio station,

rock-n-roll records were being destroyed on the air.

For me, rock-n-roll was just about over by 1957, and

my musical tastes were turning to West Coast Jazz,

particularly to the musical partnership of Gerry

Mulligan and Chet Baker.
I wouldn't get interested in

rock again until Bob Dylan went electric.
But I

experienced one last hurrah to the more raw early

sounds when a travelling rock-n-roll revue came to my

high school during my senior year.
Among the

headliners was Little Richard.

Little Richard inherited the "most nasty" throne from

Hank Ballard.
Little Richard was even more dangerous:

for one, he looked more dangerous, with his pompadour

hair style and constantly sweating brow, and the

sexuality in his voice was more like a growl than a

quiver.
Hank Ballard seduced the audience; Little

Richard raped it.

I went to the revue mainly to see Little Richard.
He'd

recently come out with a new single, "Jenny, Jenny,"

the only recording on which he'd lost his breath, and

I was hoping he'd sing it.
Near the end of the

program, he did.

Unfortunately, he wasn't able to finish "Jenny,

Jenny.
" Little Richard, who knew as well as anyone why

white teenagers had flocked to rock-n-roll, began

singing on stage with the microphone between his legs,

where it jutted out toward the audience like a long,

skinny, silver phallus. He even began stroking it.

Somewhere in the back of the auditorium was our

Principal.
She was not a fan of rock-n-roll, and the

only reason the revue had come to campus was because

the campus belonged to the Community College, which we

shared while our new high school was being built.
When

our Principal saw what Little Richard was up to, she

did the very thing one might expect from a woman whose

highlight of the week was to lead the student body in

singing "You Gotta Have Heart" at the end of each

school assembly: she turned off the power to the

building.

Somehow no riot started.
After the show was officially

cancelled, most teenagers probably went cruising or

went home, waiting for Huggy Boy to come on the radio.

I remember sitting in the dark auditorium, marveling

at the history I just had witnessed and how lucky I

was to have grown up on The Clovers and on Hank

Ballard and The Midnighters and how one day I would be

talking about seeing Little Richard the night my high

school principal turned off his power, and how

wonderful it was to be a teenager at this time and

place, to participate in the rise of rock-n-roll, even

if now Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were the

only performers who retained the forbidden danger of

the music's roots.

It wouldn't be until six years later, late on a

morning in November, 1963, when I would learn that

history has many moods, some of them dark and

uprooting, and as the sixties progressed and the

assassinations piled up, I began to understand that

never again would I live through an historical moment

as warmly nostalgic as the birthing of Little Richard.

SOS around here ... been busy, computer is running slow

Me and Pam the wife went downtown looked at some riverfront condos .. very nice
but I don't think they are in the cards for us ... also ate at Ron Camoron's new sub shop called
the Home Run Sub shop ... lol .. It is pretty much right downtown -Lafayette near the old Free Press building
close to Cobo and AT&T .. pretty good location for a downtown food biz ... and super good subs

Man last Tuesday at the Wayne Road Pub was .. Magic

A bunch of the old gang came by and jammed ... I think we had 5 guitars plus bass, sax, drums and girl singers! wow
I had to stop and look at the roof to made sure it was still there ... Long Hair Rob and Sean Allendorff have a band called Georgia Overdrive they where the jist of the jam. But Fred Lorenze the sax and Billy Star (studio lounge) John Houl and Carry Cogain the drummer .. sometimes that many players is a cluster but once in a while it is magic
and there were some Seger/Springstein type power moments ... very cool, very fun ... PS Chris Campbell from Seger's band was in town too

A lot of people talking abot Ted Nugent at the Detroit music awards ... he got a bunch of his old players together including our old pla piano player Rick Lober ... seems like that must have been a cool event ... I guess Johnny B from the Rockets jammed too

I heard our pal Question Mark and Mysterians are playing in Ann Arbor at the old Heidelberg???? that was one of the first places Benny and the Jets band ever played ... way back in the day

Any bands should feel free to mention thier gigs and events on the comment section at
www.myspace.com/bennyandthejets ... lot of traffic there ... Rossco the old Sunday Funnies drummer sent me some stuff about singer Fidge doing some Detroit gigs with the Doctor Pocket band (Rossco had a county band now days Silver Canyon) i think ....

WOW right while I am typing this I get a call from Tommy C ...(Tommy is going to the J Giles concert at the Fillmore theatre downtown Detroit) he used to play for Moose and the Sharks but now plays with Chubby Checker (Chubby has a cool myspace) Tommy's son is the guy who plays drums for Rob Zombie ... Tommy SR says there is a cool youtube of JR playing a gig with Billy Gibbons he is that good looking guitar player from ZZ TOP

Thunderbowl where I play on Thursdays got the World Series of PBA bowling ESPN TV could be 1000 pro bowlers some of the qualifing starts in May .. the event is pretty much the month of August .. Should be very cool
Seems I played for them back in the day at the old Satellite Bowl the Orbit room on Michigan and Gully that is where we did the TOGA party .. lol ........ geezzz I think that is where that guy passed away dancing to Wipe Out Too ...

(aaaa geez the anniversary of the little bro BERT SPEER too 17 years ago/on his Harley) me and Gino the Mailman will probably do a late night=midnight coffee at the White Castle on Telegraph just south of Michigan Ave WED the 29th Bert was supposed to meet us there 17 years ago and never made it)

The girls at the Giant Hamburger on Van Born and Monroe are doing some cancer benefits events
stop in one night Kim can fill you in (me and Gino went to and event in Dearborn that DJ mad man Mike was doing it was very cool)

I have some more new pictures on the www.myspace.com/bennyandthejets ...
and the message board (link is on that page too) James, Hug, Gino MJ have been doing a great job on the board

Seems like there is more I wanted to tell everyone ... but if you twitter you have to keep it short ???? LOL
Remember to check out the radio show Wednesdays 5pm via www.wpon.com (call in)

I did this book review for our pal Bob Harris on www.Amazon.com I understand my posting it here it help it be searchable for GOOGLE ... so here it is GOOGLE and www.bennyandthejets.com

Motor City Rock and Roll: The 1960's and 1970's (Images of America: Michigan)
This is a GREAT GREAT GREAT BOOK ...

I am a long time Detroit musician and radio host. I just got off my radio show this weeks guest was Question Mark of the Mysterians we talked on the air about this book

The book gives a great snapshot into the events that happend in Detroit in the 1960s and 1970s. Just as the MC 5 and Bob Seger where great Detroit moments so were KISS (Detroit Rock City) and David Bowie (Panic in Detroit)

I have this book at my radio station and every star the happens by (from the 4 Tops and Marth Reveas to Ted Nugent and Kid Rock) all fall in love with this book!
Motor City Rock and Roll, the 1960's and 1970's, released by
Arcadia Publishing in August of 2008, is a "must have" book for both
serious and casual rock fans. From the 1950's through the 1970's,
Motor City fans experienced the golden age of rock and roll.
Co-authors, Bob Harris who spent 50 years as a rock promoter, rock group
manager and rock newspaper publisher, and John Douglas Peters, rock
concert promoter in the 1960's, have written a very cool book and 200
photographs and 200 information packed captions.
Unique among the Arcadia books which focus on local history,
this book takes a more national and international look at rock from the
view of Detroit fans during the 1960's and 1970's. What Detroit
fans listened to in person, on the radio or saw in concert, together
with the clubs they visited, concert posters, disc jockeys, stage
security and rock managers, are mixed into a visual presentation that
captures chronologically, the rock sounds of the Motor City during the
1960's and 1970's.
Photos of over 190 Detroit area musicians are presented.
Twenty-eight (28) photos of Motown groups or artists are included.
Pages are devoted to Detroit area radio stations from the era (CKLW,
WCHB and WKNR). Madonna, Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, MC5, Alice Cooper,
Grand Funk Railroad, Bill Haley, Johnny Cash, Del Shannon, Mitch Ryder,
Stevie Wonder and I, Benny Speer of "Benny and the Jets Band", are some
of the almost 200 Michigan musicians pictured. Great gift for any musician or music fan!

HI ... thought I would let everyone know the ? Mark and the Mysterians concert last Sunday at the All Around in Taylor Michigan went well

And when I say "went well" I guess that is an understatement. It was standing ovation great. From the time ? Mark came on stage, till 96 tears standing ovation, through the "I Can't get No Satisfaction" encore it was what I have to describe as some true rock and roll magical moments.

? Mark dressed in a Carman Miranda bright Orange shirt did what Mick Jagger dreams about ....
The (original) Mysterians were HOT ... really I have to make comparisons to the STONES. If the STONES where doing a club date, same stage, same EQ, I couldn't imagine them being as good as Mysterians ....

Mysterians drummer was unstoppable, Keith would love to be as good as Bobby the Mysterians guitar player. The bass and keyboard were excellent and of course we expect that from ? Mark.

The opening acts did a nice job as well. The Jamie Coe band went on first, they not only featured Joe and Lisa Lagracie also Dave Caveric the original sax player. Then Willie Cyotte band with sax player Joe Labeau. Joe is the younger brother to former Benny and the Jets bass player Chris Labeau, who is said to be alive and well in Atlanta Georgia. Pistol Day Parade band (waiting on a national break out) did some covers and originals. They have a great song (potential hit)  "Your not a Celebrate you just a Rock Stars Girl Friend."  I told them I could hear a spot for a Question Mark type keyboard lick in that song.

The event really was like a class reunion. A lot of the old gang where there. Moe the old drummer from Salem Witchcraft, the Runniers, Dan the DJ, Finn the sound man, Big Bill, Lorna and her gang. There was a group of people who had seen us at a concert years ago in Tawas Mich. They remembered that show like it was yesterday with Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Badfinger, Human Beings and Benny and the Jets.

I should have some photos up on the
web site soon ... (Says -Vj, Dj, ICPfan, Jet main man, and photo guy Wendell)
You can also find ? Mark and the Mysterians site on our top friends

Thanks again
BENNY
