Who Gives Kudos:

January 19, 2007 - Friday
I did these occasionally a few years ago on another journal I keep, and recently I've been playing around with the idea of reviving it for this blog. Basically, it's a short list of things--songs, books, films, poems, experiences--that I'm most passionate about at this moment in time. This is basically how it works...

This week:

-Gal Costa's Baby (the current song on my page)

-Amy Winehouse's You Know I'm No Good (that it's the iTunes free single of the week is a bizarre coincidence...)

-Nina Simone's Sinnerman (music's equivalent to Dante's Inferno)

-Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come

-Regina Spektor's Begin to Hope

-Regina Spektor's music video for Infidelity:

-Joanna Newsom's Ys

-Anne Carson ("searching for things sublime...")

-Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

-Writing groups
Currently listening:
Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
By Neko Case
Release date: 07 March, 2006

sounds like a hoot, being passionate.

"Aimer, c'est avoir du plaisir à voir, toucher, sentir par tous les sens, et d'aussi près que possible un objet aimable qui nous aime."-Stendhal

I loved the Regina Spektor's music video.  I liked the black and white in it.  I love Regina Spektor's album, but have not seen any of her videos before the one you had in your blog. I will have to see about finding more of them to watch.  Thanks for sharing it.

when i viewed your blog the first time i had heard of spektor but wasn't sure who she was and decided not to watch the video you had for whatever reason.

....

(this is a wonderful anecdote so i had to facilitate a bit of poetic license with the out of place ellipses)

so,

i went out to lunch today with four blazers (they choose the greatest music) and when we got back to school we relaxed in the car listening to their ipod system when infidelity came on.....i absolutely loved it and asked who it was; when they told me i immediately thought of you and this splendid blog.

so,

i put on the video right now and lo and behold! it's the same song, with an equally wonderful video production.

isn's that just a splendid story?

i think so.

:-p

yes, another comment.

i had such success with ms. spektor that i decided to download nina simone's sinnerman (i've never listened to her before).

(it took 4 minutes to download, which is a long time for my computer....i didn't realize it's length until puting it on)

well, to make a short story shorter (i'm long-winded even in brevity, hence all the asides) i thought your comparison to dante's commedia was because of your love for the song....but, wow. that really was a musical equivalent (i was chanting the "power" repititon right along with her at the end, haha)

i now completely trust every musical suggestion or interest you might have.
