Is it a crime to help animals in Greece? Apparently so.

Animal protectors are routinely slandered, sued, harassed and persecuted. The latest is a lawsuit against Corfu's Marjorie Pandi. Pandi has for many years rescued and re-homed some of the island's many abandoned dogs. She keeps an average of 30 dogs on her land at any time, and is falsely accused of breeding and selling the animals on an illegal facility.

This is despite the fact that a so-called shelter supported by the government of Corfu which keeps more than 250 dogs does not have a license to operate because it is substandard. Pandi has always advocated the sterilization of companion animals and would be the last person to breed them. Without her work there is no place in Corfu for these animals to find the sanctuary that they deserve.

AN URGENT APPEAL FOR THE CORFU DOG SHELTER!

Greek Animal Rescue are launching an urgent appeal to raise funds for the Corfu Shelter. Money raised will be used to assist with the lawyer's fees for the upcoming court case and the day-to-day expenses of running the shelter.

Dear Sir,
I would politely like to direct your attention to the pending lawsuit against Marjorie Pandi, the animal protector accused of illegally operating a breeding facility for dogs in the area of Lefkimmi. Mrs Pandi is well known in animal welfare circles in and outside of Greece.

She has always advocated sterilization of companion animals and would be the last person to breed them. All dogs on her land have been abandoned; most are left outside her property by people who do not want them, despite a notice asking them not to leave dogs there.

If she is not allowed to keep dogs on her land, which is in an uninhabited area, these animals will have no place to find sanctuary. This will not enhance the image of Corfu abroad as many tourists are animal lovers and will learn of the persecution of Mrs Pandi through the internet.
