Current mood:  talkative
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

We were interviewed by Bizarre magazine in January 2009...A shorter version was published but we can now give you the full length

Is it true you all met at work? Was there a set plan as to how you would sound, and the topics you would sing about?

Leigh) We thought of the band as a kind of executive relaxation. We used to turn up to a rehearsal place, bang through the songs with the same energy as a 5-a-side match, and then part company with handshakes in the car park ready to go back to work on Monday morning.

Glenn) Yep, work it was. The main topic was taking the organisation we are used to at work and applying it to the band. Meetings are minuted and action points doled out. No fucking about.

Who do you draw inspiration from musically (or non-musically for that matter)?

Leigh) Sham 69, Exploited, Hard Skin, Cockney Rejects, Hammersmith Gorrilas, Pistols, The books of Richard Allen, particularly "Suedehead". Lanyards, Meetings, Powerpoint, highly polished brogues, Farrahs.....

Glenn) We all have KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) so we know what we have to do and when. If these aren’t hit we all know who’s fucked up. That keeps us going I’d say.

Dean) I draw inspiration from Alex Ferguson, Max Mosley, Alistair Stewart, John Reid.  They get me excited enough to play.

You got in trouble for featuring the penis of a 65 year old man on your record cover. What happened?

Leigh) The Kids were united in disgust at the sight of weathered old man's bits.

Glenn) One nob equals tears, these kids gotta toughen up.

Dean) It was fine and everyone loved it until we played an underage night.   Presenting kids with pictures of old mens cocks wasn’t deemed to be ‘right’.  I don’t know if it would have made a difference if it were a young mans cock.  Maybe.  Luckily they didn’t take the vinyl out to see the surprise pic we put on the actual record.

Are older men sexier than younger men then?

Dean) To me that is like saying are “Exploited” better than “Crass”?  It’s a given.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  There are quite a lot of guys out there who only like older guys.  It’s like a special power like in ‘heroes’ or something.  It’s a very select thing.  Leigh and Glenn don’t have it.  I’m the only special one.

Do you think a lot of punk, Oi! and hardcore bands are actually gay men afraid to come out of the closet?

Leigh) It makes you wonder. Same goes for Metallers. I saw a Death Metal band the other day, with the singer clutching his nuts, banging on about anal sex in front of a circle pit of other hairy men all but bumming along to the music.

Glenn) Fucking aida, there is so much in all walks of life. Look at footballers, not one out professional footballer then they all get down and dirty on goal celebrations. My friend, it’s all under the carpet. We all know they are there and we can even see them but I ain’t lifting the carpet.

Dean) No. OK you can bring up the Nicky Crane thing but he wasn’t actually in a band.  If you’re queer sometimes you might try and fight it by pushing yourself as far away from the gay stereotype as possible but it won’t last.  You can tell who is authentic and who’s just putting on an act.

You seem to have a perverse preoccupation with the civil service and/or the modern work place. Why is that?

Leigh) It's what we all know. Rather that than have us make up lyrics about taking Ketamine in Dalston.

Glenn) It’s been with us longer than the band and will be there when the band finishes. It’s our career the structure to all we do. It’s not a preoccupation it’s just who we are.

Dean) We all met through work.  We share the philosophy that you have to work to live and that is nothing to be ashamed of.  What you should be ashamed of is abusing power.  We stand for good civil service values not the flash city boys who are fucking this country up.  Working for the government doesn’t mean you can’t be anti-establishment.  It just means that if you are you actually understand what it is your fighting.

Could you tell me a little bit about the meaning concept of video for 'Came Out In the 90s?' It definitely seems to represent a true slice of England today

Leigh) The title came from a friend of mine talking about a homophobic Buju Banton record.

Glenn) Well a slice of ....England.... in the 90s maybe…

Dean) The video is just about me coming out to my mates.  There are a lot of personal touches in it.

How is Dean's porn novel coming along? What is it about?....

Glenn) Bloody porn novel…we all feature in it too, cheeky bastard. If it gets film rights I am picking who plays me, I’d go for Douglas Herd.

Dean) It’s going OK.  I’ve nearly finished my first draft.  Leigh gave me a load of smutty books for inspiration.  It’s not soft porn though.  It’s intellectual porn.  It’s just a book about life but life has a lot of sex in it.  Well it does for the main character.  He is called Dean.  I had hoped to publish it anonymously like ‘the story of O’ but I suppose it’s a bit late for that now.

What is the most extreme reaction you've provoked as a band? Have there been any particular hairy/scary moments?....

Leigh) Going up and down on a weird lifty thing on the back of The Coral's Lorry trying to retrieve our paltry gear out the back whilst hung over was pretty scary. Our gear was in the way of theirs apparently.

Glenn) After playing in Leicester packing up and the sound mans assistant got all NF on us saying “English power” I mean listen to our lyrics “once you’re gay there aint no turning back” he wasn’t the sharpest tool in the box. Other than that we’ve got a bit about us and can handle ourselves so we just get on with it; deal with any shit as and when.

Dean) We supported a ‘Roxy music’ cover band and the lead singer turned out to be a bit of a ‘lad’ and well into Oi.  He had all the tattoos and everything.  He was well into watching us but obviously didn’t know about the gay thing.  Luckily I think the PA was so bad he probably didn’t hear the lyrics.  He seemed to enjoy it.
