I just wanted to say the best concert I ever saw was in Kansas City when you opened for Soul Asylum. I saw you again in Lawrence and I believe your parents were there. Super Cool. I can't wait for your new duets album.!!!!

I was at that show!  I was late getting there and got to see MS finishing up the last few chords of "Sick of Myself".  I was pissed for missing that show.

I think it is understandable yet wrong minded  that people should ask anything more from an artist than their work. I don't care if it is a musician, athlete, actor, sculptor, whatever. An artist foregoes the safe life of working for a living and risks all by concentrating on his or her vision/art form. A private life is vital to the artist so they can absorb life, synthesize it, and then have it bubble to the surface in the form of their art. Then, if other people can relate to it and appreciate that creative reflection hopefully we/they can support the artist who brings that into our lives and gives us something that we understand but can not express ourselves. True there are some performers who crave attention and that is why they are on stage but most writer/artists are solitary people who create because they have to.

I know as a fan I would like to ask every question of every songwriter about every song and how it came about but the fact is we should be thankful to have the song. Otherwise, write your own.

And another pet peeve. In the case of musicians and some other artists (and athletes) they are constantly traveling and jet lagged and not getting a normal rest that most people enjoy. Why do people insist on bugging them and asking for autographs and shit like that? Are you so untrustworthy that you can't tell your friends and they won't believe you unless you have some scribble on a piece of paper? The best thing you can do is smile and nod and/or say "thanks, I love your music". What mood are you in after getting no sleep and getting jet lagged? I remember being on a flight from LA to KC and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes was on it and he obviously was tired and not wanting to talk to anyone (he probably was in LA for the Lindsey Buckingham show and flew back for the Black Crowes show in KC that night). I didn't bug the poor guy. I just thought it was cool to see his skinny ass.

So, I hope Mathew Sweet makes a decent living and keeps on doing what he has been doing. I know I eagerly await his new music but it will come out in due time. Meanwhile people should know that 98% of the musicians make 2% of the money and 2% of the musicians make 98% of the money and the people who do make it took that chance knowing that they were foregoing other endeavors so don't feel like they owe you something whether it is Mr. Sweet or anyone else.

Support you local artist! BMiller

That much angst is really tiring on the soul.  But I do agree with you on some points.  Yes, we cannot rush perfection, and that's what Matthew gives us with all of his recordings.  I understand the fact that most true artists don't record for the money, they record because they want to express themselves.  Which is why I've probably been a Matthew fan for 20 years. He has more control of his artistry. He could go back to making major label smash hit records, but he sticks to his ideals. And that, is very cool.
Secondly, as far as raving, autograph seeking maniacs is concerned, unfortunately, all performers who put themselves out there are going to have this problem to a degree. It comes with the territory. They understand that without fans, they wouldn't be where they are. But you're right. Use some tact. Don't just jump in if you see them at dinner, or whatever. If it seems like the time is right, then that's okay. People do want a connection with their favorites. Now, with Matthew opening a new Facebook page, a new blog page, and a new Twitter page, it's really nice to know that he thinks about us.  We don't need an autograph; we can connect via cyberspace. Most of us would just like to hear from him from time to time.
No, the artists don't *owe* us anything. But it is nice to know that they think about us.

Love "Under The Covers V.1"!!!  Most excellent concert experience - '92 ('93?) at a club near the Fenway in Boston, right after Altered Beast was released, and the entire packed club is singing every word to "I've Been Waiting", and I turned to my wife and said, "This is my perfect world".
