I get asked very often about my philosophy on worship. At first I used to giggle-- thinking, SURELY this is a joke. Of course I'd be half a breath into my giggle and realize CRAP.. this is an actual question.
um....philosophy..... can you use it in a sentence... I mean, ANOTHER sentence.
At first-- back in the beginning-- I figured I should get this worked out. I should take time to sit and think, perhaps pray-- maybe read something by Bono or CS Lewis-- come up with some good thoughts of 'my own'. Then I would forget Until the next time Then I would think.....then I'd forget... then I'd...... you see the problem.
Years pass and I start to notice that worship schools, conferences, seminars, (I'll save 'worship as a GENRE' for another time) are cropping up EVERYWHERE- And all I'm doing is leading worship.... without any philosophy underpants on.
Here's the deal. Worship is a reality. A truth. An entity. It's not a argument, an investigation, or a critical study of sorts.
Worship (of God) is what you do when You love Him; are confused by Him; sense Him on your skin; are angry with Him; wish to express thanks to Him; have been humbled by Him; feel nothing of Him; wish you could be better and know that you never will.
and I just can't see that taking a whole semester.
When Woodstock was uncovered by business men, rock and roll became a commodity. Likewise, when worship of God became something to study we should have known the whole heart of it was ...uh... sunk.
