I get asked very often about my philosophy on worship.
At first I used to giggle-- thinking, SURELY this is a joke. Of course
I'd be half a breath into my giggle and realize CRAP.. this is an
actual question.

um....philosophy.....
can you use it in a sentence...  I mean, ANOTHER sentence.

At first-- back in the beginning-- I figured I should get this worked
out.  I should take time to sit and think, perhaps pray-- maybe read
something by Bono or CS Lewis-- come up with some good thoughts of 'my
own'.
Then I would forget
Until the next time
Then I would think.....then I'd forget... then I'd......
you see the problem.

Years pass and I start to notice that worship schools, conferences,
seminars, (I'll save 'worship as a GENRE' for another time)  are
cropping up EVERYWHERE-  And all I'm doing is leading worship....
without any philosophy underpants on.

Here's the deal.
Worship is a reality.  A truth.  An entity.
It's not a argument, an investigation, or a critical study of sorts.

Worship (of God) is what you do when You love Him; are confused by Him;
sense Him on your skin; are angry with Him; wish to express thanks to
Him; have been  humbled by Him; feel nothing of Him; wish you could be
better and know that you never will.

and I just can't see that taking a whole semester.

When Woodstock was uncovered by business men, rock and roll became a
commodity.  Likewise, when worship of God became something to study we
should have known the whole heart of it was ...uh... sunk.

You're right. It doesn't take a whole semester. It takes a lifetime.

A Perfect definition of "Worship" Kate. :) However I think it's too late to get this into Webster's new edition of their dictionary... Missed it by that much!

Thank You! Thanks for articulating what's been bugging me for a long time. It's sad that people have made worship an industry. I don't have a problem with people wanting to learn how to do the mechanics of it better... but I think something gets lost when we get away from it being a heartfelt expression to Him. That's what I love about the Psalms... they are raw and real and express pain and confusion and hurt and joy and hopefullness and the mess of living and walking with God in our human skin. They also capture the wonder of His goodness and His mercy that He meets us in the middle of the mess. For me making it more complex just muddies the water.

Thanks for your blogs.

This was a great blog. I am glad that I am not alone in this.

Yeah this whole concept of going to conference and paying 800 bucks to learn how to worship the One and Only King of Kings kinda gets to me too. We are all called to worship the Lord with all our hearts souls and minds simply getting on your knees and asking Him to reveal his presence doesn't cost a dime. I don't know if worshiping the Lord is something that can be systematically taught.

Reminds me of being on the playground once when very young. They asked me if I "believed in" God. I just didn't understand the question. As far away as I was from Him then, it seemed like such a stupid question to me. I actually couldn't answer them.
HE IS.
We aren't talking easter bunny, here...
