Today we shot our 5th day, and our first with Adrienne King and Debbie Rochon. Both killed their respective roles (as expected). I also had my first experience working with a child actor, the very talented Brady Hender. His scene with Debbie in the hospital is so sad and raw...it was actually hard for me to keep it together at times. It didn't help that the scene plays out almost verbatim from my life - but hey, that's what this is all about. Catharsis. Well, catharsis, and blowing shit up.
To add to the list of firsts, I'm now clean-shaven for the first time in about 8 years. I got rid of my facial hair and chops so that I could believably pull off my cameo today as "Dr. House". Yeah, keep the "House" jokes to yourself. Anyway, it's kind of interesting...I apparently look like a little kid now. There should be pictures forthcoming. I'm sure I'll be my old hairy self before too long.
The last few shoot days have been a dream - we're slowly folding in more and more actors and they're all bringing their A game. Friday we shot out Katie Featherston for the Elspeth role, and she was pretty much Elspeth personified. Sean Brison rules as William. Omar has joined us in the role of Mark Kincaid, and he's murdering his part. Denton is owning the understated nuance of Cole. Melanie's inhabiting the role (Lisa) that was written specifically for her nearly 10 years ago. I like that the cast is getting a chance to actually act instead of just run around covered in blood. But that part's coming as well, of course.
The crew rules. Fucking rules. They all do their jobs and do them well, from the producer down to the grips. That's all I can really say...it's like getting a drink of water in the desert.
Fangoria and Dread Central both did Friday the 13th pieces on Adrienne joining the cast as well as breaking the new poster. Check those out if you haven't already. Also, the Walking Distance IMDb page is up right here as well.
And I just noticed that Robert Luke (our documentarian) put up a nice little blog about his first weekend on set. It pretty much sums up the vibe we have going on.
This is bar none the best movie experience I've ever had. Fade To Black was pretty much the adolescent fumblings of a teenager getting his first cinematic feel-up, Witchcraft was a piece of shit clusterfuck, Closet Space was fun, but there's a lot of ongoing negative stuff related to that movie...but this....this is the zone. It's like that moment when you meet the person you know you're going to marry. You've courted a lot of chicks and had some fun rolls in the hay, but eventually something just clicks into place and your brain re-wires itself. Walking Distance is already a watershed moment for me, regardless of how it ends up or how it's received. All that matters is that I'm having fun making movies.
Of course, shooting continues throughout the week. Marcus' crazy ass gets here tomorrow, so we can really get to the good stuff soon. I can't wait to see how the Oddtopsy FX work translates through Philip Roy's decidedly art-house cinematography. It gives me artistic wood just thinking about it. Keep checking the Walking Distance MySpace page for photos as they go up.
