KINGSVILLE — With a wink and a stretch, Hazel the cat reluctantly wakes up from her nap.
Someone is here to see her, and she isn't about to waste the opportunity for a little kitty adoration.
Hazel, a predominantly white calico with colored ears and a sweet personality, is waiting for a home, which the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League volunteers believe is just around the corner.
The APL workers watched 75 cats find new homes last week and are pushing for more during a feline liquidation of sorts as months of sluggish cat adoptions and the burden of several large-number intakes spurred the shelter to hold a cat adoption special.
Faced with euthanizing 94 cats, the shelter is offering cat adoptions for $5, which includes spaying or neutering and vaccinations. Every adoptable cat and kitten are included in the sale.
"And believe me, we are spaying and neutering as many kittens as we can as they become of age," APL board member Diane Carr said. "We had 14 kittens fixed on Saturday, and they were all adopted. More are on the surgery schedule now."
Sunday is the deadline for the APL's adoption special.
Carr said while the fee is just $5 per cat, many people are donating more, to cover the $150 veterinary bills for each cat.
"People have been wonderful, and I hope they understand this predicament. I mean, yes, we have adopted 75 cats in a week, but more cats are coming in every day," she said. "To keep this program going, we need the support of the community."
The shelter also has 106 dogs of all breeds and sizes. The shelter's occupancy limit on dogs is 80, Carr said.
"We just hope people keep opening their homes to these pets," Carr said. "The response to this sale has been phenomenal. I have never seen such a huge response to our sales."
The APL shelter, located at 5970 Green Road, is open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Friday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The shelter is closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
The APL Mall Adoption Center is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday at the Ashtabula Mall.
