I gotta say somethin' about the I'm Not There soundtrack.  After all, I play lots of Dylan songs at my shows.  That might be an understatement, but what can I say, I'm a fan, I like playing the songs I love.  In some ways I feel that Dylan shouldn't be "covered" because an important part of his songs are his performances of them.  It the entire package that makes them great, his persona, the time period, the musicians who he played with, etc.

At the very least, covers of Dylan should be left to artists whose job it is to cover other artists/songwriters.   Which brings me to I'm Not There: a range of Dylan covers from the brilliant to the not-so-hot.  I dont care about the bad ones, I want to talk about the best one: Ramblin' Jack's version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues."  Ramblin' Jack is a pro at bringing traditional and other people's songs to life, it's a skill that's overlooked (or just not talked about) in the rock'n'roll world today.  The song also fit's Jack's persona perfectly, he slows the song down a bit and brings the lyrics to front and tells the story.  His version brings out the humor of the song as well as the sadness.

Dylan is best known as "the great songwriter," but he is also a great musical performer which is a major force in his songwriting.  Instead of releasing yet another Dylan cover album, they should release an album of Dylan covering other artists.

Currently listening:
Sweetheart of the Rodeo
By The Byrds

Aaaah,

There's an idea. It would be very very interesting to hear his renditions of some of contemporary rock's best songs.

Can you imagine Dylan covering "On A Plane" by Nirvana?!

:D
