Sponge Coral is one of the most beautiful gem corals. It really isn't a sponge, it just looks like one. Sponge coral is very porous so it is lightweight, and works very well in handcrafted jewelry. Sometimes the red color is enhanced and come in different shades. The color of very fine coral is an orangey-red and is mostly found in in the South China Sea. Until recently, sponge coral was not used for jewelry. They weren't considered jewelry-quality coral because they had too many holes. I use it alot and accent it with other stones. It can be worn with almost attire from day casual or evening dressy. Matched with oval black lava stones here in this set, it is a stunning mix.
