First of all..and most importantly..the health issues..

Disposable diapers contain traces of Dioxin, an extremely toxic by-product of the paper-bleaching process.  It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals.  It is banned in most countries, but not the U.S..

Disposable diapers contain Tributyl-tin (TBT) - a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals.

Disposable diapers contain sodium polyacrylate, a type of super absorbent polymer (SAP), which becomes a gel-like substance when wet. A similar substance had been used in super-absorbancy tampons until the early 1980s when it was revealed that the material increased the risk of toxic shock syndrome.

In May 2000, the Archives of Disease in Childhood published research showing that scrotal temperature is increased in boys wearing disposable diapers, and that prolonged use of disposable diapers will blunt or completely abolish the physiological testicular cooling mechanism important for normal spermatogenesis.

You should be outraged.

Second of all...the environmental issue...

In 1988, over 18 billion diapers were sold and consumed in the United States that year.  Based on our calculations, we estimate that 27.4 billion disposable diapers are consumed every year in the U.S.

The instructions on a disposable diaper package advice that all fecal matter should be deposited in the toilet before discarding, yet less than one half of one percent of all waste from single-use diapers goes into the sewage system.

Over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill.

In 1988, nearly $300 million dollars were spent annually just to discard disposable diapers, whereas cotton diapers are reused 50 to 200 times before being turned into rags.

No one knows how long it takes for a disposable diaper to decompose, but it is estimated to be about 250-500 years, long after your children, grandchildren and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone.

Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste.  In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste.

Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp.

The manufacture and use of disposable diapers amounts to 2.3 times more water wasted than cloth.

Over 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum feedstocks and 20 pounds of chlorine are used to produce disposable diapers for one baby EACH YEAR.

In 1991, an attempt towards recycling disposable diapers was made in the city of Seattle, involving 800 families, 30 day care centers, a hospital and a Seattle-based recycler for a period of one year. The conclusion made by Procter & Gamble was that recycling disposable diapers was not an economically feasible task on any scale.

We love and care for our children with every fiber of our being. We only want the best for them..so why stop at what we wrap around their bottoms everyday? We are a happy cloth diapering family! Have any questions regarding brands...cost...types of cloth? Email me!

wow Cre I didn't know all this and plan on reposting this for others to see. I know there is a lot of junk put into our foods we get from stores that we read everything we buy, I feel horrified that I've used these diapers on my little ones.

Thank you for caring and sharing

I do not think that alot of people are aware. I wasn't with my first two kids...I used disposables and never really thought much about it. I was young and just figured this was the way to go. As I got older, I begain to do research when I got pregnant with my third and was horrified.

I thought this post was important..its always a good thing to be educated on the dangers of everyday things that we all, as mamas, use. We use Fuzzi Bunz..they are AIO's and are just wonderful!!

Yea, the Fuzzi Bunz are 'spensive.  We would buy her one or two at a time. Even put a few in her easter basket last year..lol. Now we have 12 all together and have had this many for about a year. I wash em about every other day. I wish we had a few more..some of them are hand me downs from her big sis and the elastic around the legs isn't what it used to be. lol Christmas is coming up....haha

i had a few good ones, dont remember the brand, but we left on a 2 month road trip, and we use disposables on the road, and i accidentally forgot to wash my dry pail, and came back to moldy dipes so i had to trash em. i am so glad though that now i have a washer cause it makes it so much easier to wash often! although my youngest is pretty much potty trained i will definetly be washin quite quite often when this lil one gets here!!

Eww..i'll bet that diaper pail smelled ripe! lol I have to put ours outside from time to time to air out a bit. Even if the lid is off a tiny little bit, you can smell it. lol

As for the smell that sometimes lingers in the diapers, even after washing, I have found that the clothesline/sunshine are all you need. Forget the expensive detergents to get rid of smells!

You should start making your own diapers for your new little one to come!

And look....they are even easy to camp with. Just wash them in a tub with some Bronners..and line dry. They dry pretty fast..the inserts, however take a bit longer so I would suggest taking double the amount of liners.

good idea, i always have bronners on hand (dreadies eh?!!) i guess i just get overwhelmed with all that comes along with camping!! or traveling!! we cook a lot on the road/camping instead of eating out and cant afford the quick style natural foods, ya know like the travel foods so i just do what i can--i.e. disposables, good thing they have good organic disposable dipes or guess i should say chem free disp. dipes!! but you know, i guess it isnt that much more work, i just wanna make sure i clean em ya know. oh and totally hear ya on the line dry sunshine idea. we dont use anything to keep out the smell, sometimes i put vinegar in the rinse cycle, and squeeze some lemon juice on the stains when i hang to dry, but thats about it, its soOoOO crazy how much the sun bleaches!!

oh and let me tell ya, that pail did stink and it always stinks even if its barely opened like you said, its like you know when it gets opened. sometimes my lil one throws trash in that one on accident instead of the trash can, cause there next to each other, and it stinks so bad! i even wash the pul bag in it every time i wash the dipes, and its still smell stale. its just enclosed piss i guess!!!
but yeah i have some dipes im making/made/hand me downs from big brother and i do love em, but i really want some of them really nice ones ya know!! its like you can tell the difference. maybe not, haha who knows!! thanks for all you info sis!!~*~

We are also a happy cloth diapering family!  I have used the same dipes for both my girls and They are starting to fall apart but Lily is Potty training.....so next time we'll need new dipes!  But I think of all the money we have saved!  THOUSANDS!!  I think of all the dioxins we have saved the earth from!  I think of all the positive!  And each time I struggled with it living in an apartment with no washer and dryer, in the winter, with two little ones in cloth dipes, and a very stinky dry pail, I thought of the Great Mother.  I kept my children close to my heart and thought of not only their current health but their future!  I have much love and respect for those who choose the same.  It can be very difficult at times but it is so SOOO worth it!  Now, with my own washer and dryer, It is super easy!  Now all I need in this new house is a permanent clothesline!  LOL!  TTFN!

Lol..actually I *do* have a permanent clothsline in our house.   It is our backup for rainy days when I can't use the one outside. Our dryer is broken and has been for months. We just never got it fixed. I don't much care for the dryer anyways..clothesline works just as good..just not as convienent. But, since wintertime is coming, I am afraid we will need to get it fixed. I can be burly, but hanging out clothes/diapers in this freezing wind we get off the ocean..nah.

We too are a cloth diapering family.  I have recently started making my own out of just about any flannel I can find. You can find a nice flannel nightgown at the trift store for under a dollar sometimes and get a couple dipes out of it. Here is the pattern I use. I love the way they fit my daughter.

http://www.ottobredesign.com/en/print/pdf/vaippa_en.pdf

I also crochet my own wool soakers and am very pleased with how they work. I even keep her in them overnight.  I just wanted to share a great way to do diapers on a budget. Thanks for sharing all that great info!!! Do you mind if I copy it to my blog (with your credit of course) in hopes of reaching even more people?

YAY for cloth diapers!!!

I started using them with my first becasue we couldn't afford disposables and someone offered us 24 used cloth ones! :)  I haven't looked back since!  Right now  we use prefolds and wool wraps or pants that I knit. As Althea gets older I'll start using prefolds and bummis wraps, easier to clean than wool ;)                                 It seems around here more and more people are using cloth diapers! It's so nice! Thanks for posting the info!!

much love, Julia

We have used cloth for both of our kids, ITs made real easy with the convenience of a washing machine, I dont understand why anyone would chose disposables. modern convinences make it so easy. the cost savings is incredable, and why would people be fine with wrapping toxic stuff around their precious lil babes.  I dont get it on bit. I learned from my mom she used cloth on my bro and I because we were poor. The potty training benefits of cloth are also a good reason to use, cloth wearing babies tend to potty train earlier cause they done like the feel of their piss and learn quicker.

 Nice blog thanks

I love my cloth diapers!  We have fuzzi bunz and magic-alls for Daddy, and I make my own fitteds with hemp and organic fabrics and tie-dye them.  I also make wool pants out of old sweaters from Goodwill.  I hope you don't mind me posting this, but there's a great site, www.diaperpin.com  You will learn more about cloth diapers then you could possibly ever want to know!

Thanx so much, Cre. I know you posted this long ago, but I just recently came across it. I have 3 children, and had always used disposables. I just thought, well, that's what you do. I'm so glad I happened upon your blog. After reading it, I did some more reasearch and ended up buying some fuzzi bunz my youngest. They're great- well, still working out some kinks, because I just got them yesterday- and I feel so much better about the decision to cloth diaper! You're right- people just don't know, so thanks for educating me on it!

:) We use cloth diapers too! We use a diaper service, it's a very eco-minded company, no bleach, recycled water, etc. We had to abruptly move at one point, so we used disposable for a while, but I was sooooo happy when we switched back. Thanks for sharing the info...and they use the same stuff in our pads/tampons...scarry! Use cloth instead!

wow thanks so much for posting this. I am 7 months pregnant, and while we wanted to cloth diaper, when we tried to research and find brands and techniques, we couldnt find good info and we dont know mamas here who do it...so we kinda gave up for a while. How much do you have to do laundry? What brand do you like? Isnt it expensive for teh diapers, and then all the washing and drying.....and what if you are out all day, do you carry the dirty ones with you?? My husband is not feeling that :) Its hard to do without support...I would appreciatte any info you wanted to share mama

Hey there sweet mama,

I would like to use this as a reference in my senior thesis paper. We too are a cloth diapering family!!!! So much cheaper!!! Was also easier to wash a load in the middle of the night in the middle of winter than run to the store!!!!! I knew something was up with my first one and the first time his diaper pilled up. I immediatly got online and looked up what it was. I was appalled! I admit from time to time I throw on some seventh generation when we are on the road. I am not brave enough to carry a dirty one with me all day! I also love the reaction from people when I change a diaper in public.......a brown diaper? Gets people asking questions!!!

Peace to you and yours mama,
kristi

Hey Mama! I have cloth diapered all three of my lil people. It was never a chore or an inconvienience as some peole would think. I felt good putting soft diapers on them. Diapers that did not make weird plastic sounds when they moved around.

My son was about 8 months old when we ran out of diapers at my brother's home. He too had a lil man and offered us a disposable diaper, not wanting to get pee everywhere(my brother is anal about natural things) I accepted. Within 20 minutes my son was crying and I could not figure it out. I finally thought to check the diaper, his area was raw. He had the equivlent of a third degree burn on his diaper area. A chemical burn that took weeks to completely heal. I was so disguisted at myself and felt horrible. If we don't voice our opinions and get these nasty things banned other sweet children may suufer the same pain.

My son is now 6 and we babysat my year old niece a few weeks ago. She wears disposables. When I changed her diaper Leaf asked why I was throwing her diaper away.
I explained she wore diapers thatwere to be thrown away~his response"we can wash it" I loved it
I miss little diapers hanging on the line! Many blessings sweet mama
