R.I.P. CD101.9FM NY

If you live in the New York Metro area, you probably know by now that Smooth Jazz CD101.9FM is now a ROCK station. While CD101.9 was often criticized, it was the only commercial smooth jazz station in the NY metro area.  It is now only available on HD radio.

As an up-and-coming smooth/contemporary jazz artist from NY, I am shocked and saddened to see the loss of yet another outlet. While I would LOVE to use this particular blog as a venting session, I have decided to take a more positive route (since, as we all know, negativity begets negativity).  So instead...

I challenge the powers that be; the folks with the financial means, to hook up with music connoisseurs and resurrect the smooth jazz genre in New York. There is a huge opportunity to breathe new life into this genre, which will allow musicians to eat and business to thrive.  I'm quite sure there is someone out there who is up to the challenge...

Peace,

Ragan

Claudia

Had no idea CD 101.9 was off the air as a jazz station. My gosh, I feel like it is the end of an era. I hope folks will take your challenge to heart!

I too was surprised to gear CD 101.9 vanished a la WRVR. But I do have to say that this smooth jazz term is not something I could say I was comfortable with.

When CD came onto the seen it was the start of "Contemporary Jazz" with the likes of George Howard, Hiroshima, Syro Gyra etc, and we had a blast! But then I started hearing songs that were not even Jazz complied on these stations coast to coast and I as many others turned away.
CD states there was less of a demand, but they created this by diluting what was already good.

I thought the removal of CD 101.9 could have been handled better, but this is a trend that is going to be prominent over the next few years until as with your challenge, the powers that be, give us back the formula that we fell in love with in the first place.

Ragan,

Hey, sorry to see it go -- from a long distance, that is, being in Iowa. Nevertheless, we have a similar issue here, but it's probably based more on the lack of substantial population to support different genres. I'd be interested in hearing more of the solutions.

Growing up in NJ, I unfortunately haven't lived there in a long time. Therefore, my comments are rather late to this news. Since the late 80's, I absolutely adored CD101.9 with its music programming and live simulcast concerts. I still have a cassette recording somewhere of Miles Davis and many others live at the Summit in Houston back in '89.

I am truly saddened to see this station go.
