Earthquake

It is time to plan in case of any ‘natural’ disaster or ANY other kind of unforeseen serious issue that can arise.  Let’s start with the most ‘common’ possible disaster in California…Earthquake.  If we are all prepared for that, we will be prepared for almost anything.  Time is of the essence since it could happen tomorrow, and if  memory serves you with the ‘Northridge Quake’…everything was interrupted for days.  So let’s look at the ‘worst case’ scenario.  A magnitude 7-9 quake will leave us ‘without’ the following:

Electricity
Natural gas
Running water
Grocery stores/food
Gas stations
Banks and ATM’s
Police Protection

CASH. Make sure you have plenty of small bills stashed away someplace safe since getting your money from a bank will be impossible.  Have enough to last several weeks if you can.
Stock up on all food and water.  Have AT LEAST  a 60 +day supply.  Don’t forget dog food, powdered milk, lots of canned meats, vegetables, breakfast bars, canned fruit, dried beans, rice and vitamins. Purchase a water filtering system where, if you must…you can utilize your pool water when everything else has been exhausted or contaminated.  (I will post a link to where I bought mine if you need it.)
Purchase kerosene lanterns for night time.  Batteries will last just so long.  There are solar powered devises that you can charge throughout the day,  devices for your car that will charge your cell phone, etc.  Solar powered radios are a must along with flashlights and don't forget lighters and a few boxes of good old fashioned matches.
Propane cooking stove or an outdoor propane BBQ.  The old fashioned coal BBQ's are great for family fun but not great in a survival situation since it's hard to boil water using coals and you will run out of them quickly.  Have extra propane canisters stored in a safe, cool place.
Prepare your cars with ‘survival kits’.  Pack a ‘back-pack’ with at least a 2 day supply of food,  water, first aid kit, thermal blanket, money, and a pair of tennis shoes in case the roads are impassable and you have to walk it.

If you do not own a firearm, consider getting one or something to protect yourself and family.  Please consider desperate people go to desperate measures and those not prepared may be driven to do terrible things.  We all must consider the ‘worst case’ scenario at all times.
No electricity or phones mean no working alarm systems protecting your home OR you and your family. Most likely there will be panic everywhere, the police will have their hands full and you'll be on your own. I want you to imagine how you will feel with no protection against people entering your home.   It's safe to say you'll be in big trouble.

Remember that cell towers may be knocked out and since a lot of us now have cable phone, our home phones will be useless.  Make a plan for your family of where to meet so that all can be accounted for in an emergency situation.  We have to consider ALL possibilities to preserve a decent ‘way of life’ for our families if the worst happens.  You need to consider the altitude of your home…since the sea level may be affected.  Please consider the year your home was built and its ability to withstand a 1-3-5 minute ‘shake’.  Put a plan in place for every room of your house you may be in when it hits.

If you are ready for a major earthquake disaster, you are ready for just about anything.  That is what I want for my friends here.  Feel free to add to this list for all the readers to prepare themselves.  I'll sleep better knowing you're prepared.

I am ready... are you?

With love always,
Cherie

I have plenty of chainsaws for any fallen trees, but my food stash is getting old.. Probably still eatable..  We had an October 4th snow storm that shut us down years ago.. The leaves on the trees just made them to heavy to hold up to all that wet snow..I had no power for 2 weeks.. It was tough..

I hope we never see this, but it is always good to be prepared.. Take Care Cheire,  Tone ( XX's & OO's )

AWESOME blog Cherie!  So true.....we have to remember California is not only rockin' and rollin' but there's also a whole lot of shakin' goin' on.   I was in the Loma Prieta Quake of '89....and not far from where the Cypress Structure collapsed.   We were all very lucky up here that we (personally) wern't hurt but many were unfortunately...and there was quite a lot of damage. Here in the Bay Area we were without electricity for a few days and yes, I agree, we should be prepared.   Lots of us tend to think the "big one" won't happen in our lifetime... when in fact it could happen NOW (thems the facts people).....Cherie is right.  Be prepared.  It seems there is so much going on right now and it is of the utmost importance to not only be prepared, but to protect ourselves, our loved ones and each other.   Don't regret what you could have prepared for with a few minutes of your time.  Life is too precious.
Thank you for this blog Cherie.  You are amazing!!
Be safe always,
xx

Outstanding report, and very detailed, but what about apartments? What applies to you in an up stairs, or down stairs area? Should you know how old your apartment is?

That is an important question Elvis.  It is your right to know if your building has been reto-fitted (?) has been inspected, is up to code, etc..
No matter what, you need to be able to survive without the modern luxuries we have been spoiled by.
If you can survive with what you have at home for one month, without having to venture out, you are in better shape then most.

Elvis.  I can't recall where you live but you should have a plan where your family will meet in case of a disaster.  This could be an economic disaster as well where banks close and people hit the streets in a panic.  Have a meeting with those that live in your building, make a plan to protect each other.  It's just good common sense to foresee what 'could' happen and prepare.

Morning Cherie! I heard from my friend up in Rancho Cordova Sacremento that there were 13 ocean tremors this morning that were felt along the San Andreas fault. We live in Alabama now working on Maxwell Air Force base, but I have friends all over CALI like you that are hella cool. I wondered about the apartments and the condition of the buildings under that kind of stress, especially the apartments in So CAL  that were built in the thirties', also I hear the renters insurance can be brutal! Later oxooxo

Experts also recommend a small amount of gold, in case the disaster is so widespread that currency is a problem.  It might make the difference between eating and starving in the first month.

You are RIGHT Steve.  They also say that junk silver, half dollars, quarters and dimes will be useful so start throwing them in a jar.  Since gold is at it's peak even that 'broken and unwanted gold jewelry' (those commercials they keep flooding us with) might come in handy in a barter situation.  Gold is excepted everywhere instead of paper money but it's hard to by a roll of TP with a 1 once gold piece.

BTW, remember paper goods such as, when you make your list.

Hey Cherie!!

Hope you are well.

Yesh, you must all be prepared out there, since you on the left coast live on the 'Ring of Fire'...and after what has happened over the last couple of days in Sumatra and the Samoas, it's probably a good idea to go over preparedness out there.  Probably would be a good idea to monitor the 'Ring of Fire' online.  I'll be Googleing it in while I'm at work.

Catch ya' soon!

It's pretty sad that you all live in an area where plate boundaries meet, I guess all paradises has a darker side to them...
Alll I can say is that in case of an earthquake, I wish everybody to be safe and sound, and if you are prepared "the Cherie Way", you will have great options to manage everything coming.

Maybe you could get a preparedness program in local schools, churches or other public places where those living in apartments could search for shelter? Just to avoid panic and desperate actions towards others?

awareness of where to seek shelter could not only be the rescue for those unprepared, but also a comfort for those who are.

Lot's of love, and best wishes for all of you.

I like the way you're thinking Miss Lady. There MUST be something in the air that certain of us are picking up on. I feel this suspense, awaiting god knows what, god knows when.  People think I've lost it, but I have started learning survival in the past couple of years and I've recently begun going to a range to practice the "what if" scenario you mentioned above.

It is time to get ready simply because of the fact that the signs are there.

Peace.

Thank You Cherie!   I don't live in California, but everything you wrote about can apply to SO MANY situations that are definitely coming!  This level of prepardeness can apply to any catastrophe that will arise!  I hate these days that we are in.  I was always taught about it, dreaded it & now they're here!
There will come a day where the only choice we can make is to comply or be put to death.  A national I.D. in the form of a computer chip will be forced on the world to accept and cash will be a thing of the past. Gold will be the only means of underground commerce outside of the I.D. Chip.  Those who do not cooperate? --well it will be fatal!   I fear for the elderly ...for the children!

Thanks Eric,
Yes, we live in a scary world.  Let's hope that these things do not come to pass and the people of the good old USA won't let it happen.  I have faith in US!
It's empowering when you are prepared for anything.

Very good information, Cherie!  For a while I worked with the Emergency Management agency in Wichita, KS and one subject that was a major part of the program was disaster management mitigation.  Of course, earthquakes weren't a problem in the plains states, but tornadoes were almost a certainty.

It's better to be prepared well in advance for something, especially the inevitable major earthquake in CA, than to try to survive after NOT being prepared.  Hopefully many people will heed your advice and not be caught unprepared.
