Deep Roots: The St. Johns Poetry Sessions, Volume III, set to release new CD Thursday, May 21st at Roosevelt High School.
As part of an all school Arts & Performance Showcase, the Deep Roots CD Release Party will take place from 5:30-8:30 PM in the school’s cafeteria. The Deep Roots Music Project, now in its third year at Roosevelt, consists of students, known as The St. Johns Poets, who write poetry and lyrics that local Portland artists set to music and record. There are ten tracks on Volume III and five of the artists will be performing live. This year the show will kick off with Jessica Stiles, who recorded the song, Paradise, which is the first song on the CD. Ezekiel Goodrick, Bliss Junkie, Renee Muzquiz, and Desmond Spann (DLUX: THE LIGHT) will also be performing as part of the celebration.
Along with the CD, The St. Johns Poets took a trip to Georgia and Alabama to explore the history of the Civil Rights Movement, adding a new dimension to the Deep Roots project. The political music of the era was part of the curriculum and two of the students wrote a song, My Change My Gain, performed by Rasheeda Ameera, inspired by the election of Barack Obama..
