I was on vacation the past two weeks and while I enjoyed my time off, I am happy to get back to work and back to routine. I know I'm not alone – parents are ready to send the children back to school, children are ready to get back to see their friends, and businesses that have a slowdown over the holidays are ready to get back to "business as usual" . Many of us will welcome the opportunity to get our lives back on a schedule.
I celebrated Christmas and spent my time off enjoying all that goes with the holiday – festive dinners, gift sharing, Christmas carols, family and friends. My home was decorated to the max, I entertained out of town guests, attended performances of the Nutcracker and Christmas Carol – and even spent an evening at Epcot enjoying the beautiful Candlelight procession. But as busy as it sounds, I also had time to reflect on the year ahead.
2008 ended on a "less than encouraging" note – retailers are not celebrating their holiday sales, businesses are closing their doors and most of us have already tightened our belts to get us through this rocky ride. But I am going to stay positive about 2009, looking forward with hope and optimism.
Yes, a new year is on the horizon, one that will bring change to our world, our country and to each of us individually. I am encouraged by the fact that in just two weeks, history will be made when we inaugurate the first African American president of the United States. I choose to celebrate the spirit and conviction of the voting public – there is hope for a better world around the corner. I anticipate more businesses "going green", more emphasis on the future of our world, our children and the greater good.
I am always optimistic, of course, about the positive impact the girls we serve through Girl Scouting will have on the world. Our girls will help lead the way to a better future. My wish for each of you is a better 2009!
Happy New Year!
