For those of you who don't know our history, we are named after the original factory based in Muncie over a century ago. "Warner Gear" is the common local phrase when referring to BorgWarner Automotive.
I decided on this name in almost a project-type manner. I felt that the working class, blue-collar way of life was on the way out. Like someone was quoted as saying in the Star Press, we are now a society of the "haves and have-nots". So I started The Warner Gear Blue Collar Music Society to celebrate the middle class; to take a trip back in time in terms of music and write songs with appreciation towards the working man and woman (count me in that number, as well- I'm a factory rat in modern times). I always knew in my heart that one day, the shop would close. I think everybody in Muncie did. So I made it my mission to never forget the people who made this country so great, who worked countless shifts to put food on the table and get their children educated. Pretty soon, this will be harder than ever for most Americans.
Yes, I'm from Muncie. And I go back often. But today, even if I'm not a resident, I still think of my mom, who spent years at the plant, and my uncle, who is there now. And I think about all the people who will never have the chance to set foot through those doors.
Let's pray that Muncie gets stronger, and has a future after all.
