Hello Friends-

Thank you *everyone* for making the first three months with our new dining room & kitchen so successful.  Our sales in the first three months have doubled over the same period last year and we're hoping (need!) to see the same growth throughout the year.  Not only have our sales grown but our staff has doubled-- and we have added new professional level positions (such as Jeff Egan, our chef).  With all the talk of the poor economy-- and all the people I personally know who are laid off or have had hours cut-- its a wonderful thing to see that our local community has shown such commitment to supporting local restaurants and retail in our downtown.  We continue to stay committed to purchasing a large portion of our products from locally produced food sources, which keeps dollars circulating in our Vermont economy.

Thank you, also, for bringing friends with you (introducing new faces to The Bee's Knees) and telling your friends and neighbors about all the good things you've experienced here (and telling US about things we can improve upon!).  Your support as a customer and as a friend of The Bee's Knees by your word of mouth is the most effective way to keep The Bee's Knees viable.  Its very much appreciated.

BRUNCH BRUNCH BRUNCH
We have been working to get the word out that Saturday and Sunday is BRUNCH.  Pancakes, baked french toast, eggs benedict, omelettes, mimosas, plus a selection of our most loved sandwiches (and, of course, mac n cheese).   If you haven't tried us yet, try us.  The picture below is of our Breakfast Special last weekend:  Boyden Farms burger, Applecheek Farm poached eggs, and tomato atop Elmore Mtn Bread focaccia with a Winding Brook Farm bacon hollandaise sauce.  Plus:  Johi's playing jazz piano every other Sunday mid-day!

CSR CERTIFICATES & COMMUNITY LENDERS
If you are the owner of a Community Supported Restaurant Certificate, your April-June certificates are now valid.  You do not need to have your card with you to redeem your certificate-- we have your numbers listed by the register.   If you are a community lender, please let your server know before your bill arrives so you can be properly given your discount!

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

The rotating artist this month is Dominique Gustin.  You can fine her online at:  http://www.paintingandportraiture.com/ . Dominique is from East Hardwick and we're loving her artwork on our walls.  She paints and collages over photographs as well as other mediums-- beautiful paintings and portraiture.

The Beeline Ramblers  Fran Mandeville and Lisa Sturz are not your average singer/songwriters. They are masters at choosing just the right lyrics to fit perfectly with the music to create the feeling they want to share with you, whether it’s a song about a great joy in life, or a person who has fallen on hard times. If you close your eyes and listen, you actually become part of the song.

Mark Legrand Solo.  Mark LeGrand has been playing music in ....Vermont.... since 1967. Moving as a youngster from the coast of ....Connecticut.... at age fourteen Mark says was "like moving into a Norman Rockwell painting." Maybe it seemed that way because he moved to ....West Arlington.., ..Vermont...., where the famous painter lived and many of the townspeople were the subjects of his paintings. Mark carried around an old acoustic guitar and had a head filled with ....New York City.... radio waves and a heart filled with homesickness.. A school friend turned him onto Hank Williams via a 78 rpm crank up Victrola at a deer camp and Mark was never the same again. He already had The Lovesick Blues, and now he knew what they sounded like. Mark was in the first electric band in ..West Arlington.. and when they played outside on warm summer nights all the cows must have loved it.   More than 40 yrs have passed since that wandering boy roamed the fields, streams, Grange Halls and Honky-Tonks of a very different ....Vermont..... A ....Vermont.... that was transcending into a more modern era. Interstate highways and big ski area were on the way, as the small farms that dotted the hillsides were vanishing. Yet many people still value the old ways and work hard to maintain them. New, small organic farms and markets, land set aside for future generations and folks coming together to preserve stronger communities are setting the stage for a new era. This is more than a place, it's a way of life. It's here that Mark chooses to live, write and perform. The people and the landscape are the raw material for his songs. Old or new, rich or poor, ....Vermont.... is a magical kingdom to dream in.

Bread & Bones.  acoustic folk trio.  Bread and Bones is a Vermont-based acoustic trio performing original music with a strong traditional-roots foundation. They are Richard Ruane, Beth Duquette and Mitch Barron. Ruane has been an award-winner or finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition in ..Kerrville.., ..Texas.., the Great Waters Music Festival Songwriter Contest in ..Wolfeboro.., ..New Hampshire.., the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (sponsored by the Songwriters Association of Washington, D.C.), the Plowshares Coffeehouse Singer-Songwriter Competition in ..Phoenixville.., ..Pennsylvania.., and the SolarFest Songwriter Showcase in ....Tinmouth.., ..Vermont.....   The sound of Bread and Bones is characterized by imaginative two- and three-part harmonies over solid guitar and bass work. Richard Ruane's warm baritone voice blends seamlessly with Beth Duquette’s expressive alto. Ruane plays guitar and also ukulele, mandolin and banjo. Mitch Barron adds his wonderful presence on fretless, fretted and upright bass and vocals.

He has performed at such diverse venues as Club Passim, ....Columbia.. ..University...., Vincent's,  Ukestock '08, and the historic Hotel Vernon.  Guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, slide, and banjo-ukelele.
