PUSH is a disturbing tale of Precious Jones life after and during abuse by both her parents. It was disturbing and enlightening at the same time. Precious was sexually molested by her father and bore two children. She was also sexually and physically abused by her mother.
This story has many downs and very few "ups". However, Sapphire gave hope to the reader by allowing us to see Precious's progress as she attended an alternative school. Precious was almost totally illiterate when she began. The entire story was told by Precious and in her voice as illustrated by the author's writing style. It read like a journal. Seeing Precious's progress in the writing gave the reader hope of a happy ending.
Although the ending was bitter sweet, Precious was able to gain some self esteem by attending a school where she felt understood and loved. She was able to relate to those around her who had similar backgrounds which made her feel more comfortable with who she was and gave her support for the issues she was dealing with. It helped her to not feel so alone in her life which was cold, cruel and unkind.
This is a very quick read once you get into the flow of the language. Our reading group was able to not only discuss this book we entertained conversation that enlightened us all.
