"Come on, come on, come on and cut me / come on, come on, come on and watch me bleed" - this definitely is NOT the latest single by Lady GaGa and thank the Lord it isn't. This is (now) an autobiographical account of lead singer Dave Cook's reward for working on several new songs in Glasgow late at night - the poor bastard got stabbed 4 times and ended up listening to the tones of a life-support machine. It's tough in Glasgow but no tougher than Cook himself - he came round, stuck up 2 middle fingers and decided to stick this out as a single.
Being an old git I can hear a lot of references to New Wave bands from the late 70's here - Echo & The Bunnymen, U2 (Boy-era), Killing Joke and The Sound. You, being young sprightly things, will hear a spot of Interpol and White Lies. For that those reasons I am keen to hear more but, for now, we have this rather intense and energetic little burst of frenetic anger. I love the first 3 minutes but then it all gets a bit samey and cries out for a break in the mood en route to its conclusion. I still like it though - it just lacks a middle-eight or a bit more colour. Promising though..
This is a download only release and sets up the first wave of promotion for a forthcoming 2010 EP. There is also a single launch gig at Glasgow's 13th Note on Nov 7th.
