The 50's were a great time for some of the most influentual and ground-breaking music ever made, and we still see this influence today in so many of the songs we hear. And the fifties weren't just about do-wop!-- I wanted to find out more, so I asked my friend Donny Brusca, a fantastic DJ, to deliver some of his knowlage. Viv, When people think of 50's dance music, they usually think of the lindy, even though the dance is really a holdover from earlier decades known as the swing era. Probably the most recognizable 50's song and a great dance set opener is "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & the Comets. Others in that style include "At the Hop" and "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay" by Danny and the Juniors.
The term "rock and roll" was coined in the Fifties and was exemplified by such great dance hits as "All Shook Up" and "Jailhouse Rock" by Elvis Presley, "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" by Jerry Lee Lewis, and "Johnny B Goode" by Chuck Berry.
When it comes to slow dancing, I turn to the doo wop classics such as "In the Still of the Nite" by the 5 Satins, "Earth Angel" by the Penguins, and "I Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos. There were also the silky vocal and jazz standards influenced by the earlier hit parade era, such as "Chances Are" by Johnny Mathis and "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole.
I like to add a couple of fox trots, such as Frank Sinatra's "I've Got You Under My Skin" or Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife." And "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" by Perez Prado makes a great cha-cha.
And for a dancefloor sing-a-long, the Isley Brothers' original version of "Shout" is still a hit.
The decade of the Fifties remains a great source of party classics for DJs, even some fifty years later.Donny BruscaIf you'd like to learn more about Donny, or contact him for a party, he can be found at: Sound Sensation or directly at: donny@sound-sensation.com Happy listening! ~Hey Viv!
