There's a nice review of our EP on SouthScene. This is what it looks like:
One of the best things about this CD is that it seems to get better and
better the more times I listen to it. I was impressed the first time I
heard it but it has become especially great having played the EP so
many times and having seen Wise Children live on several occasions now.
There
is an enchanting and often haunting quality to the songs which
separates Wise Children from your typically bland acoustic
singer-songwriter. Main man Robin Warren-Adamson displays a rare
intelligence to his songs which shows through in his poetically
articulate lyrics and his uncomplicated yet rich musical arrangements.
Wise
Children are clearly not scared to experiment in the studio either
which is a huge benefit to the overall sound of the EP. Choosing to use
effects such as vocoder sounds on You Were a Single Red Blood Cell...
and menacing electric guitar echoes on Paint is equal parts brave and
(most importantly) tasteful.
This release also shows another
string to the bow of Neil Kennedy who is building an impressively
strong reputation in new studio The Ranch Production House which has
opened for business fairly recently. The production is exquisitely
smooth and refined, whilst still having such a natural and spacious
sound that allows Wise Children’s unique charm come to the fore.
Together with Geoff Swan, it seems that The Ranch really is setting a
new benchmark for studios in the south.
The culmination of all
the elements stated above results in Wise Children’s debut EP being one
of the most fresh, engaging and beautiful records that I have ever
heard from an unsigned act. Equally at home in intimate venues, over
commercial airwaves or on the coolest of cool playlist-jockey’s iPod;
Wise Children have everything they need to achieve very big things.
