Well, summer hit for real here in New Orleans over the last week or so. Deep Louisiana summer with dense, smothering heat that slows reality to a crawl and melts your senses.
But man, it's been fun. We got the Wednesdays on the Point series off to good start this past week with Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience. Despite some heavy rain right at 5:30, we had a really nice turnout and Terrance and the guys sounded great and had everyone smiling and dancing in the wet grass. It was great to see a such killer act on our new stage and such a nice setting. Funny to think we started with nothing and no money a year ago, and now we can present national talent on a real stage. I'm really proud to be part of the group with Carol Cowely and Mark from Rosetree Glass, and the folks from the Old Point and Aunt Leni's that's been putting these shows on.
If you are an artist and want to be considered for WOTP 2010, send me a message through myspace!
Been working hard on finishing the new CD for Threadhead Records. We were in the studio a few weeks ago with Vasti Jackson producing, Tony Hall on bass, Raymond Weber on drums and Thaddeus Richard on piano. So far we've got all of the beds but one, and a lot of the tracks are pretty much complete. All of the tracks on the current EP will be on the CD, including the 3 here on myspace, along with 7 new tunes. It will be out in the fall, look for a big release party around October.
Heading to Europe in a couple of weeks to play at the New Orleans Festival in Innsbruck with my partner in crime Christof Waibel. We are doing our duo on the main stage on Saturday night (July 25), and I will be guesting on the Sunday morning Gospel gig. Christof and I also have some club gigs around the festival, and Amanda will be with us, so hopefully she will jump in on some of the gigs.
Meanwhile everything is cruising along here. Working a lot with Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters, having lots of fun in the summer heat. Also having a blast playing steel guitar with Fatien Ensemble, that band is an experience. Such amazing playersand unique music, and Seguenon Kone is a beast. He has got to be one of the most intense performers I have ever worked with. He is a true master of rhythm in every musical and physical sense. I had seen him do some incredible dancing before, but last weekend at Ashe Cultural Center he was on fire. he did some things I couldn't really believe, including picking up his balophone (must weigh 30 lbs) with his teeth, and holding it out straight while 2 little kids played it. I'm really excited to be in this project, and we very grateful that Threadhead Records is collecting money to help us record later in the year. If you want to know more about that, check out www.threadheadrecords.com.
Iim still doing my regular Thursday gigs at the Old Point. While West Bank Mike is working offshore he will be doing one gig a month with me and piano master Joshua Paxton will be doing the rest. Come on by and say hey!
