hey all
so i gotta say im a little bit mad. and im sorry, cause i love you all, but, frankly, we need to talk. so today we played a show in cambridge. during the set we played a song about how the US government/media fucked over the black population of new orleans post katrina (its called ursa major).
i thought, in light of the events of this week between cambridge police and african american members of the cambridge community, it would be a relevant song to play and discuss. im sad to say our efforts at discussing the subject were met with shoutings of "less talk more rock!"
im super glad that you not only know that line but also what the song is referencing, but what we were talking about today is not merely some self dick-sucking rant about how awesome we think we are (as ltmr is about) but something that needs to be discussed.
despite the fact that we have a black president, racism is still a huge issue in this country and its repercussions hurt countless americans every day.
we are super stoked that you love listening to music as much as we do, but sometimes theres more about this whole thing than just the words and chords we play.
aren't you all a bit mad? you should be.
in the year 2009 a man was essentially arrested in his own home for his race.
with all due respect, that is completely disgusting.
completely.
i just wish yall were a little more concerned with what is going on LITERALLY 2 miles away from where you were standing than simply blank words and chords being blasted at you from speakers at the middle east.
maybe im just getting old, i dont know.
but if we all want to be active and progressive, i feel as though it is time that we start paying more attention to things that matter than simply our on personal level of entertainment.

i know this doesn't refer to all of you, but for those of you whom it does refer to...

i'd like to see some more rock

I might just be naive, but I think that saying that he was arrested because of his race is bit absurd. I'd like to think that any cop would have arrested a man that forced open the door to a house at night time, and then argued with the police about having to show identification.  What if that was your home, and he pushed the door open, and to avoid being considered racist, the police officer didn't ask for identification.  A random guy is now in your home and the police are just letting it happen.  Maybe that is just me.

i mean if that WAS the case then yes, saying the man was arrested for his race would be absurd. but gates wasn't even arrested for b&e, he was arrested for disorderly conduct because six or seven people "rubber necked" when the argument moved from inside the house to the front porch. for a disorderly conduct charge to go through, the suspect has to have upset a crowd. six or seven passers by hardly would constitute a crowd. what it boils down to is the cop using his power unjustly against someone he deemed a subordinate based on race. trust me, i grew up in a cop family- cops are more than used to having the citizenry yell at them. and this guy was a sergeant! he would have been more than use to being yelled at by an upset cantibridgian. yelling at a cop doesn't get you arrested. the case is more than weak that he should have been arrested.
