A very huge thank you to everyone who is participating in the 2008 Community Walks! So far the walks have raised more than $900,000 for education, research and programs for survivors of suicide.

This would not be possible without you! Your dedication and tireless efforts to raise funds for this important cause is amazing and inspiring.

If you have not registered, please go to www.outofthedarkness.org

If you have registered, we will soon be posting easy how-to instructions on how to use the tools in the walker DonorDrive so you can continue to raise funds and recruit walkers to your team!

Thank you again for being a part of the Out of the Darkness Community Walks.

My son took his life July 4th 2008. He was only 19 years old. I cannot tell you the overwhelming sadness i feel, and the huge sense of loss. I miss him so much and think of him every day. I live 4 hours from where you are having your walk (northern Michigan), but my friend who lives much closer is going to walk in honor of my son. Anyhow i suport your cause and wish you lots of luck.
Sincerely, Lori Cole

My name is Jan and I lost my son on November 12, 2007. He had just turned 20. I know exactly how you feel. It has been almost 11 months now and it still feels like yesterday. The pain never leaves. He was the baby of three sons. A first time walk has been set for November 8, in our town of Natchez, Ms. So far we have 60 walkers and have raised $195.00 and have several sponsors. It is amazing how our community is wanting to help. I am so thankful for the American Foundation for Suicide prevention. I am looking forward to the out of the darkness walk . I want to let our town know suicide needs to be talked about and not kept silent!. Contact the foundation and see about bringing a walk to your town. For me, it is a way to heal. I speak of my son everyday and I will forever do so. His life had meaning and it was precious to our family. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. God Bless You! A mother who has been there.

My Grandfather took his life on June 29, 2007. I will forever remember that day for the rest of my life. I miss his jokes, his laughter, his hugs, his love, his voice but most of all just his being. I walked in his memory on September 13, 2008 in Santa Monica, CA, and I will continue to do so for as long as I can. I only raised $150.00 but hopefully, somehow that will help change someones life.
Thanks AFSP! Lots of Love & Hope!

I lost my son May 10.2008 each day is still a struggle but since we found AFSP we have found more strengh from our new friends. My family in Dallas walked the Dallas walk and me and our Ohio family just did the Ohio walk. One thing that my friends and family took away from the walks is a better understanding of how depression and bipolar effected my son as well as others. It has opened our eyes even more to be more caring and understanding and to be more educated.
