Introducing SHARKS And The Return of Northern Towns
Swagger City's next release is a split double 7" featuring Northern Towns and SHARKS.
SHARKS Hailing from Royal Leamington Spa, SHARKS made an indelible first impression with their Shallow Waters EP. While a cursory listen to the EP immediately brings to mind the sonic legacy of greats such as The Buzzcocks, The Clash, and Stiff Little Fingers, a closer listen reveals that SHARKS are definitively carving out their own unique path. A variety of genre labels have been applied, but at their core, SHARKS play soulful and viscerally emotive rock n' roll. Ever since the release of their online exclusive Shallow Waters, there has been great anticipation for a physical release from the band. We at Swagger City have shared in the clamoring and are thrilled to announce the release of their split double 7" with San Diego's Northern Towns. SHARKS' record will consist of two originals, "Mirrors Within Mirrors" and "Museums," that leave us every bit as awestruck as we were upon hearingShallow Waters. So for those of you obsessively listening to their EP the past several months, trust you'll be just as in love with these songs. Closing out their record is a cover of The Wedding Present's "Brassneck" that sounds every bit as haunting as David Gedge's masterpiece. Northern Towns
Fresh off their debut, Good As Gold, Northern Towns return with material that vividly demonstrates their evolution as songwriters. Daniel Sant's lyrical focus incorporates heartfelt storytelling while also invoking the transformative power of rock n' roll. Sant has found a poignant way to tell a music-as-salvation story via Motown and Stax. Musically, the band is growing increasingly focused, truly owning their hybridized sound, born out of equal love for mod, punk, and long-forgotten, but still quite vital rock n' roll gems.
It's never easy to follow a strong debut, and Northern Towns have done it with grace. As fans of the band since their earliest demo material, these tracks are everything we hoped for in a new record. In addition to the two originals, the band offers their take on the French Resistance anthem, "The Partisan," penned by Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie, and etched into the popular music canon via its inclusion on Leonard Cohen's landmark album Songs from a Room.
