According to an article in the most recent National Geographic, us poor red-heads face extinction in potentially the next 100 years. Currently, it is estimated that less than 2% of the world's population has red hair, and we are becoming rarer as the generations pass. The article (as reported in Brisbane's Courier Mail online here) basically says that global intermingling has led to the demise of the red-head, and if we want to save ourselves our best chance is to move to Scotland (where an estimated 40% carry the ginger gene) and breed with other gingers. Heh.

I guess I should mention here that the
Bad Science Forum was pretty quick to de-bunk this article, and even I know enough about genetics to view the possibility of us all disappearing in the next 100 years as pretty slim... but hey, I kind of like the idea of being considered a rare commodity... that, and the idea of a massive ginger bonk-fest in Scotland :)
