Guiding Light, Global/CBS — The final slap in the face: CBS says farewell to GL in L.A.!
• Cheap much? Insiders are telling The Suds Report that CBS doesn’t want to spend any extra money to celebrate/mourn GL’s last episode. Their solution? CBS will piggyback on their annual Emmy soiree after the telecast by calling it the official GL
Farewell Party. “All the CBS cast members and crew will be invited. Too
bad not everyone is travelling to L.A.,” gripes one actor, adding, “The
party should take place in New York, not L.A.” I wouldn’t be surprised
if the network charges admission!
• One of this year’s
most improved actresses, Michelle Ray Smith (Ava), is back on July 24
for Jeffrey’s funeral. The new mother tells Soap Opera Weekly that her father committed suicide nine months before she signed a contract with GL.
She says, “His name was Jeffrey, and I always felt that there was this
uncanny thing happening. Now the show is cancelled, and my last episode
is of my [character’s] dad dying. It’s crazy. I’m not a super
hippie-dippy person, but it was really, for me, closing a chapter in my
life and a really symbolic experience.” Smith is the latest soap star
to report she landed a small role in Angelina Jolie’s film, Salt.
• Tom Pelphrey (Reva 2.0) fans rejoice: The Emmy winner is back on Aug. 5.
• Scream queen Caitlin Van Zandt (Ashlee) recently became engaged to Daniel Tighe. Good luck with that, buddy.
• GL is deader
than Peapack’s tourism market. Producers handed the town a $10,000
cheque to thank them for helping make Springfield look cloudy and
depressing. One of the show's producers, Kim Armstrong, presented the
cheque to the borough council Tuesday night as a parting gift in
appreciation for a two-year lease of the Komline House. “We appreciate
everything you have done for us and it’s been a wonderful experience,”
Armstrong said after presenting the cheque to Mayor William Horton.
In addition, the
cancelled soap is donating its wardrobe to Bottomless Closet, a New
York charity that helps outfit economically disadvantaged women with
clothes for interviews. The non-profit will receive hundreds of
clothes, shoes, handbags, jewelry and accessories from the show’s
72-year run.
Hopefully, my BFF, Ellen Wheeler, is saving Reva’s slutty red dresses and water fountain for a certain Canadian reporter.
• Otalia Part Two: The very smart Crystal Chappell (Olivia) recently announced on Twitter that her online soap opera, Venice, which she created, produces and stars in, will also co-star Jessica Leccia (Natalia and her purse)! Click here for more information.
• Digest and Weekly are both reporting that signing 2009 Emmy nominee Daniel Cosgrove (Bill, GL) as nuJoey (OLTL) is almost a done deal. Perfect casting if you ask me.—Which GL star has been irritating a casting director by sending tapes and writing letters to an ABC soap pleading for a role?
