What is Astrodrama?
Astrodrama is a form of experiential or creative astrology. It is a participatory group experience designed to represent the astrological horoscope in a dramatic or theatrical form. Participants in an astrodrama experience dynamically role-play astrologically symbolic situations by embodying astrological "energies", or archetypes. It is, quite literally, the spontaneous enactment of the horoscope.
Astrodrama takes us way beyond the traditional, intellectual understanding of astrology. It becomes creative, spontaneous and dynamic, releasing the true potency of astrological understanding.
It is seen by many of its practitioners as being part of a broader movement in late 20th century astrology away from the practice of predicting a future, assumed to be fixed by an immutable fate, and toward a more creative, participatory engagement with destiny.
By role playing and interacting with archetypal mythological themes and motifs, with hero characters, Gods and Goddesses, we set in motion a powerful transformational process that can dramatically shift our experience of ourselves and help us re-connect the core of our Being.
The energies contained within the signs, planets, houses and aspects of astrology can be directly engaged with (and thus experienced), provoking an inner stirring that awakens our latent perception of the archetypes that underscore our life experiences and draws those parts into alignment with our experience. Using the mythical archetypes connected to the ten planets of astrology we can learn how these archetypes function in our lives through direct experience.
The aims of experiential or creative astrology are considered by its practitioners to be both educational and healing, conducive to self-development and spiritual growth. In respect of its educational applications, guided imagery or visual aids are regularly employed as ways of teaching astrology to students, while its healing aspects come through in the performance of astrodrama, an emotionally cathartic and potentially transformational experience.
