VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 48!

Oppose the So-Called "Personhood Amendment"

This fall, Colorado voters will be asked to amend our constitution to redefine "person" and to grant constitutional rights from the moment of fertilization. The amendment is vague, dangerous, and simply goes too far. It seeks to restrict women's access to healthcare, it invites government intrusion into our personal lives, and, if it passes, it's permanent.

* Under this constitutional change, a pregnant woman experiencing complications could be powerless to receive treatment for a disease or condition - like cancer - if the treatment might harm the fetus

* It could ban several of the most medically effective forms of birth control

* It could outlaw all abortions, even in the earliest weeks of pregnancy or in cases of rape, incest, or when the life or health of the woman is at risk.

* Amendment 48 would allow the government to interfere with the private, personal decisions that a woman makes with her family, her faith, and her doctor.

* While reproductive health issues like birth control and abortion can be controversial in the Latino community, we believe that each woman and her family must be free to make life decisions that are right for them.

* The proposed amendment could criminalize pregnant women by subjecting them to scrutiny and investigation if they have a miscarriage or engage in behaviors perceived as dangerous while pregnant.

* A woman's health is central to the health of her family.  The proposed constitutional change could harm women's health by allowing the government to interfere in family decision making about healthcare.
