The Big Drum In The Sky Religion
 517 Virginia Ave. #2
Harrisonburg, VA   22802 USA

'Humanity Won't Be Happy...' cdr,  Jan. '08.....Recorded live at our 2nd show, at the local Anarchist Free Space/Infoshop. There was no audience becos people left or joined in the din. We only had 3 mic's so we only used 3 channels on the 4track. Later, we discovered ghosts in the 4th channel and left them in. The Infoshop closed the next day, but not becos of us.

'War Party'   cdr,  May '08.........Not warlike at all. Temporarily squatting a house way out in the county, bummin' water off the neighbors, wandering around the woods, collecting bones, recording everytime anybody came out. Wordless vocals, strings and drums, musical playing cards.

'The Transcendental Outhouse' cdr, July '08......Live performances overlaid with studio noodling. This is a tribute of sorts to Angus MacLise so there's samples of his music and voice all over it. (Saddhu, saddhu, saddhu....)

'sha ri va ri'   cdr, Sept. '08.......Live performances/studio overdumps. During the time this was coming together, several people moved away, some people stopped participating and then our long-suffering 4track shuffled off this mortal coil, forcing us to borrow one to finish recording and do the mixing. Our approach to recording and our sound had to change.........................

'Pagan Futility Ritual' cdr, Dec '08..........The simplest ideas can be really hard to turn into reality. This one took months of planning and only a few hours of doing. The dreaded drum drone - one looooooooooooooooong track of shamanic drumming, echoed, distorted and generally altered on an obsolete desktop. Designed to facilitate spirit travel.

"Ghost Dance Party Hits'  cdr, Feb. 09............Messyanic and doomed. This was made using the same basic approach as pagan, but with greater variety in obscure source material rendered f.u.b.a.r. We have no fear that the original copyright holders will recognize their property and sue us for all we got becos we ain't got nuthin'.

The Proper Sorrows Of The Soul cdr, Mar '09....... Clearing off the top of the piano, we found a bunch of old work tapes which were recorded on 4track and when we played them on a regular tape-player some of 'em were freakin' gold. This is them, plus some live snippets, bedroom recordings and other errata. Our most eclectic release to date.

Psychic…Powerless…Another Man’s Sacrament
, cdr, June ’09…Our first with actual “songs” which have actual “titles” which will not be listed here becos some of them are “covers” and we did not and will not get “permission”.

Mark Bradley/The Big Drum In The Sky Religion, split cdr, June '09... Mark Bradley does lovely drones followed by the sort of drones that you can generally expect from BDSR. Recording debut of the Opossum. These are limited to 30, hand-numbered.

No Sleep 'Til Angkor!, cdr or cassette, Oct. '09...What ya get here is two tracks, about 39minutes each, of repeating dronewhitenoise. It is kinda pointless. Maybe good for sleeping...or driving yourself and those around you insane.....or dream wandering.

God Hates A Coward, cdr, Dec. '09....Samples, loops, noise interplaying with acoustic instruments. Some elements are progressing linearly while others are repeating, so its kind of like how we perceive time.

Nonmusical Crap For Sale:

T-Shirts:  Black, brown, grey or an other color. We make them one at a time using a special process which removes the color from the fabric allowing us to "write" the name  and logo of the band and some random slogan on each shirt. Please specify size.                                                                                $8ppd.

Bottle of Dryer Lint: A flask-type bottle , approximately in the neighborhood of about a pint, of actual dryer lint, jammed in tight with a chopstick. Every one is unique, lovingly hand-packed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
                                                                                      $25ppd.

The Big Drum in the Sky Religion - The Transcendental Outhouse - Review

The Big Drum In The Sky Religion

The Transcendental Outhouse

DIY - 2008

The Big Drum In The Sky Religion is a project or collective based out of Harrisonburg Virginia. I think Piasa may have played with these guys before but i'm not sure. Either way I have been familiar with them for a little bit now but have never heard a release. This is a CDR titled The Transcendental Outhouse which is a pretty cool title. The CDR comes in printed envelope with a cover picture of an old wooden outhouse with moon on it and it looks creepy and cool. Inside you get a logo sheet with some info a long with another info sheet. These are limited to 100 and was recorded in July 2008. Over all I can say satisfied with the CDR presentation.

Each track here is untitled and flow more as movements. The first track is about 23 minutes long. It's a pretty lofi sounding DIY basement experimental folk, 60's/70's inspired stoned jam session. I hear some acoustic/electric guitars, noise and hum probably from some pedals and effects with some weird sources and has distorted/manipulated soundclips pretty much the whole way through. The track is very jam oriented and has these underlying senses of melody from the guitars and rythmic drone comming from the drums and percussion which is very experimental in nature. Throughout the 20 something minutes the track builds and falls and the noise (harsh noise I guess) swooshes in and out. It sounds very lonely and personal with it's general pyschadelia that makes you feel like your in a smoky room in the 60's tripping on bad acid and shooting up speed. It ends abdrubtly and then leads into a short 2nd track that leads into the next track with an odd soundscape.

The 3rd intitled track is what I think a 45 minute live performance. It starts out how a good amount of odd experimental imrpove sets do with some lazy stoned drums/percussion and some guitar noodles. The track starts to build up with some slightly rythmic guitar strums and other plucking sounds around and more drums and percussion. You will also start to here some noise (pedal noise I assume) behind everything as the jam builds into it's highest energy that I think live was more prominent sounding... as with this lofi recording ceratin soinds are just louder than others. This shit starts to turn on big mess of pyschadelic, schizophrenic, drunk and coked up dying whores having an all out evil jam session that is too much fun to raise any spirits. The vocals on this track are fucking crazy. They are awesome. The track then starts to die down again with some more low key vocals that are still crazy then turns into some spoken word that I thought was a sample at first. Loys of whistles and other odd sound devices and tribal drums bring this stoned experimental jam session to an end. The last track is about 10 minutes long and is similar to the 1st and 3rd tracks with acoustic and electric guitars and other random istruments. They have a long soundclip/sample going through the song which is pretty cool and fucked up. You also start to hear some odd delayed/reverbed out vocals and out of tune violins and such. Again another cool experimental jam.

All in all this was a very cool DIY experimental CDR that I reccomened to anybody looking for something that'll make them zone out for a good awhile. The overall presentation and aesthetic they have going on I think is very cool and from this CDR I do want to see them live becuase I really think that'd be the best way to hear these guys. In a way they remind me of a band from Alabama called Them Natives with the noise infused pyschadelic lofi experimental folk jams.

The Big Drum In The Sky Religion - Ghost Dance Party Hits review

The Big Drum In The Sky Religion - Ghost Dance Party Hits review

ghost-dance-cover

Today i got a package from the states, it contained a cdr to review and one cdr extra.

My first impression of “Ghost Dance Party Hits” was a bit a confused but pleased one.

The cdr comes in a folded piece of A4 format paper with a totally twisted mask on the front cover with lots of weird black texture thingies that seem to represent the madness of the mask somehow.

On the back there is a nice little story written, yet to my taste they could have left out the words “asses”and “tit”. Don’t get me wrong, i LOVE asses but in a story in religious book writing style it simply does not fit. However the name “Ghost Dance Party Hits” has been thought out nicely.

When i open the paper a cdr in a red paper sleeve with a little card comes out. I happen to have the 44th copy out of 100. The card contains the same crazy black texture as the front cover. And i think that that texture is the most interesting of the design of this release. The cdr itself is a regular cdr with black and red pen crisscross the titles written on it. That really looks not nice, To my opinion the cdr could better be left blank in such cases. What seems to be missing is a track list, but i do not exclude the option that that has been left out on purpose and this makes the music also more interesting because you are left to your own imagination fully and not blocked up by titles someone else has made for you. After all it is you, the listener who is going on a journey.

I slide the cd into the disc man and put my headphones on my head.

Track 01 functions as a sort of intro. There is a loud clapping of hands, LOTS of hands, and a strange voice far away starts to howl. Its like a strange creature that is hiding, then the voice start to transform slowly into drone more and more with each howl. The clapping dies away and track 02 starts immediately with all kinds of sounds. There are drone tones with sounds that give you a feeling either some metal flying creature is being kept in a little box and is flying up the walls all the time without rest. Or some other weird thing that keeps crashing into metal. I’m curious how they have made this sound. It is in total harmony with the deep drone tones which seems to be less noticeable as the attention goes to the flying up the walls sound yet the drone is always present and this track can bring you into a trance state without much effort, After eleven minutes of pleasant trance state we get some disturbances as track 03 start. The Deep sound is much darker, and the crackling hissing sounds are disturbing and restless. Contact with spirits? Possible. Contact with your own fears? Possible or maybe it are some kind of little keepers that hold the keys to other dimensions.

Yet after some minutes i get comfortable with the sounds and the sounds in a way seem to get comfortable with my presence as well. After a while i get the feeling that there are all kinds of industrial noises from machinery but on the other hand it seems like it are ancient drums with dancing people that drum to these strange crackling and hissing beings that keep jumping and touching borders of dimensions and get bounced back again. For me this 20 minute long track represents parallel realities. The last track on this disk continues the trance where track 03 left you but with different tones and the cracking and hissing beings are gone. The music is meant to simply bring you quickly in a pleasant trance state of mind and keep you there for as long as the music last.

I must admit this cd was better then i expected. It does not bore yet it does not entertain. This is pure trance music and it does its job how it is supposed to do…it makes you travel. With a few minor negative comments on the design only i think that it is quiet a nice and recommendable release.

Subject: "War Party"- Big Drum In The Sky Religion out now!

"War Party" is a re-issued album from Big Drum In The Sky Religion. This is the first time on cassette. If you are unfamiliar with the band, get your rear end over to www.myspace.com/bigdrumskyreligion and check them out. They can best be described by one word... WEIRD. But that is high praise coming from me. It takes a lot for me to think its weird. Rhythmic drum beats, chants, noise are huge parts of their sound...

This cassette is limited to just 16 copies. Why 16? Why not...

It comes on a c120 packaged in a green PVC case made from the bib pants I wear on my fishing boat... seriously... it was an old pair with holes and I thought it was a good way to recycle them and to keep them out of the landfill...

Message me if you want a copy... They are $7 ppd in Canada and the US. $10 for Europe, China, Australia, Antarctica...
